Barrera posts third shutout in draw at Alvernia

READING, Pa. – Senior goalkeeper Rodrigo Barrera stopped six Alvernia shots for his third shutout of the season, but neither the Blue Jays nor Crusaders could come up with a goal in a 0-0 draw Wednesday night.

Elizabethtown outshot Alvernia 16-10 behind four from Shane Votto and three each from Steve Eneme and Gilbert Waso. The Blue Jays (6-1-1), who were held without a goal for the first time in eight games this season, certainly had their chances in the first half. They sent nine shots towards the Alvernia goal, but Crusader keeper Zach Rider kept the game scoreless with three saves. At the other end, Barrera turned aside both Alvernia chances.

The hosts were able to get seven shots off in the second half to Elizabethtown's five, but four saves from Barrera and two by Rider got the game to overtime.

Neither team put a shot on goal in two 10-minute "golden goal" periods.

Barrera notched his 11th career shutout for a Blue Jays side which will look to move to 2-0 in the Landmark Conference Saturday afternoon at Juniata (1 p.m.).

Rocky Elgogari, Jay Ringer and Austin Young all registered a pair of shots for Alvernia and Rider totaled five saves.
