Goals aplenty for men's soccer at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team got right back on the scoring track after a scoreless draw this past Wednesday at Alvernia, pumping in four goals en route to a Landmark Conference win over Juniata.

Elizabethtown (7-1-1, 2-0 Landmark) received goals from each level of its lineup as top attacker Gilbert Waso scored his team-leading seventh, midfielder Aaron Rathsam notched his first of the year, and reigning league Defensive Athlete of the Week Martin Fevre added two more to his season total in another impressive offensive display from the senior back.

E-town used a few set piece plays early to try and gain the advantage over Juniata (2-6-1, 0-2 Landmark), but headers from Shane Votto and Scott Hess missed the mark. Waso's first shot of the game in the 13th minute was saved by goalie James Johnson.

A little over midway through the first half, the Blue Jays' freshman attacker was set up by Votto and Hess on his seventh of the year in the 26th minute as E-town went out to a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles' Steven Stroup and Nathan Woods had chances minutes apart, but the first went high and Woods' shot from the left wing was stopped by Rodrigo Barrera.

In quick fashion, the Jays unloaded two goals in the span of 2:14. John Andrews set up Fevre for his fourth of the year in the 40th minute, just before Rathsam recorded his first of the year in the 42nd minute, the assist from Steve Eneme.

Elizabethtown outshot Juniata 12-6 and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks in the opening 45. They led 3-0 at the half.

Ryan Sandell replaced Barrera at the start of the second half, and was immediately called upon to keep the shutout going. He made saves on back-to-back shots by the Eagles, and finished with three during his half of play.

Fevre launched a corner kick in the 71st minute straight into the goal for his fifth of the season and second of the game to put E-town up comfortably 4-1.

Dani Meyer-Arrivilla managed to spoil the shutout with a goal in the 74th minute, but the hole was already too big for Juniata to climb out of as E-town went on to the victory by the same score.

Elizabethtown will begin a three-game home stand on Wednesday, September 30 when former MAC rival and nationally-ranked Messiah visits Ira R. Herr Field at 7 p.m.
