Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Christman, E-town shut down Wesley

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Emma Christman logged a goal and an assist and the Elizabethtown field hockey team did not allow a shot for the first time in eight seasons in a 3-0 shutout victory over Wesley at Wolf Field Wednesday.

From the opening whistle, E-town tilted the field in its favor, using two shots from Jacki Hikes and another from Alyssa Aichele in the first 9:20 to put the visiting Wolverines (1-7) on their heels.

Christman, camped out in the middle of the striking circle, deflected a Hikes pass up and over the head of Wesley goalie Kayla Fromal for the game's first goal at 9:52. Elizabethtown continued to pressure Fromal and the Wesley defense for the duration of the half with 10 shots and two penalty corners.

Fromal was up to the task, keeping it a one-goal game at the half with five saves. She came up large yet again in the 49th minute, springing left to deny Christman her second goal of the afternoon on a penalty stroke. The Blue Jays (3-3) would finally break through just over a minute later. Christman found Aichele down at the left post for the senior's sixth goal of the season at 49:16.

Elizabethtown would finish the scoring in the 69th minute, taking advantage of an ill-timed substitution from the Wolverines. Three Blue Jays broke up field and had numbers while Wesley tried to get a sub back in time. It was for naught, as Andrea Keady swept a pass left to right that Kelsey Detweiler deposited for a 3-0 lead.

Fromal made 10 saves in defeat for the Wolverines, while backup Sydney Stump stopped one shot and Kasey Fry had a defensive save. Hannah Mack, making her second start of the season, was protected well by her defense in nailing down her first career shutout. Mack was not forced to make a save, as the Blue Jays did not allow a shot for the first time in 151 games, going back to a 3-0 win over Wilkes back on Sept. 18, 2007.

Christman led the Blue Jays with six shots, while Aichele and Nicole Leaf added four apiece.

Landmark play opens Saturday with a 1 p.m. road game at 12th-ranked Catholic.
