Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Jays defeat York, 3-1, extend winning streak to five

YORK, Pa. – Tuesday's first set left the sourest of tastes with Elizabethtown, an 11-2 lead slipping out of its grasp. The Blue Jays were determined not to let it happen again. They overcame some hair-raising moments, including some late in the fourth set, to defeat York (Pa.) 3-1 in a non-conference match at Wolf Gymnasium.

Juliana Mowen secured her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs, Mackenzie Garner had 10 kills and five blocks and Steph High topped 900 career digs (905) while accumulating a match-high 37 assists to lead the Blue Jays to their eighth win of the season.

Six kills accounted for E-town's first 11 points as they took command of the first set. As the set played on, a myriad of mistakes caught up to the visitors. They committed 10 attacking errors and another four while serving to let the Spartans back into it. York (4-7) wouldn't take its first lead of the set until it was 21-20 following a pair of Blue Jay errors.

Kristina Smith's kill and two York mishaps put the Blue Jays (8-2) back in front, 23-21. Smith then served for the set, but York stayed alive and eventually broke a 26-all tie with consecutive kills from Heather Kline and Eryn Brady to win the opener 28-26.

Elizabethtown responded with a furious start to the second, too, ripping off seven of the first nine points. This time there would be no comeback for the hosts. Two kills from reigning Landmark Athlete of the Week Janae Moran and one each from Garner and Morgan Reiss supplemented a handful of York errors, as the Jays closed the second set on a 9-2 run for a 25-14 victory.

Mowen and Garner connected for three kills each, with Garner also picking up a solo block and two block assists as the Jays threw up four blocks in a 26-24 third set win.

The fourth set went to E-town by the same score, as it had to withstand a late push by the Spartans, who trailed by as many as six points. York tied the set at 24 on a Brooke Krebs kill, but the Blue Jays remained calm, using back-to-back kills from Garner and Moran to push their winning streak to five for the first time since 2012 when they won nine in a row from Sept. 14-29.

Moran led the Jays with 13 kills, with Mowen (11) and Garner (10) both in double figures, while the defense was bolstered by Garner's five blocks and Shannon Deck's 18 digs. Megan McNaul added six kills and an ace. The senior was one of six players to contribute to the team's seven aces in the match.

Kelly Cavey provided the Spartans with a team-high 10 kills and Sarah Figgs came off the bench to dish out seven kills on a .211 hitting percentage. Sarah Wukitch collected 35 assists and 12 digs and libero Katherine Graziano dug out 23 E-town attacks.

Elizabethtown will return to action Friday in the Days Inn Blue Jay Classic at Elizabethtown Area High School's Daubert Gymnasium. Please note time changes for Friday's matches, as the Blue Jays will open at 4:30 p.m. against Cabrini and also play at 8:30 against Carnegie Mellon.
