Cerankowski nets game-winner in double overtime

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — Kaceyanne Cerankowski's timely first goal of the season sent the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team home with its second straight win as the Blue Jays outlasted St. Mary's (Md.) 4-3 in double overtime.

Fellow senior Lauren Berry broke out of her early season scoring slump with her first of the season for Elizabethtown (2-2-1) in the tenth minute. Moments after being fouled, Berry lined up and took the ensuing free kick from the edge of the box and beat St. Mary's (2-3-0) keeper Katie Flores.

Minutes later, the 13th minute to be exact, Berry made it a brace with her second in less than three minutes. Maddie Burkhardt crossed the ball in from the right and found Berry in the middle of the box. The forward made no mistake with her shot, burying it for her second of the contest.

E-town kept its 2-0 lead and added on a third in the 35th minute off the foot of Lindsay Hoagland. Cerankowski recorded the assist on Hoagland's second of the year that made it 3-0.

The Seahawks got one back in the 39th minute. It was Gillian Sawyer's first goal of a hat trick in the game.

The Jays threatened in the middle of the second half, but Flores made several key saves to keep the scoreline at 3-1. She stopped a header from Maria Boretti, then made another save off Boretti's shot seconds later.

Sawyer scored her second moments later to make it a one-goal game in the 71st minute.

St. Mary's held E-town's offense in check late in the game and provided Sawyer with another opportunity to level the game and she did in the 81st minute.

Cerankowski had a final attempt for the Jays with a little over two minutes left, but saw her shot hit the crossbar.

Trisha Clark had EC's lone shot attempt on goal in the first overtime period, but Flores was in position for the save. A second overtime period would be needed.

St. Mary's tried to end the game early in the second OT, but this time it was Dana Robidoux that kept the game going. The senior keeper stopped Jess Konecke's shot in 102nd minute.

E-town's first attempt at goal ended up being the only one it would need. Cerankowski's quick turn at the edge of the box provided her space as her shot evaded Flores and hit the back of the net to give the Blue Jays its second straight victory.

In what was an even game in the end, Elizabethtown held a slight advanage in shots, 19-16. Both teams had five corner kicks. Robidoux made three saves while Flores finished with six.

The women's soccer team remains on the road, facing Penn St.-Harrisburg on Friday, September 18 at 4 p.m.
