Blue Jays post third straight clean sheet in 2-0 win over Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – One streak came to a close, but another continued on, as the Blue Jay men's soccer team blanked homestanding Gwynedd Mercy, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon.

Rodrigo Barrera made one save for his second shutout of the season and Elizabethtown neared 300 minutes –298:55 to be exact– without a goal allowed.

Gwynedd Mercy became the first team to keep the unbeaten Blue Jays (5-0) off the scoreboard in the opening 10 minutes, but it would not matter. Martin Fevre scored his first goal of the season in the closing minutes of the first half and Gilbert Waso added his team and Landmark Conference leading sixth of the year shortly after the break.

Jeff Light assisted on Fevre's goal, which came on E-town's last shot of the first half. The Blue and Gray pinned Gwynedd Mercy in a corner all afternoon, applying constant pressure and outshooting the Griffins 23-1.

Eight of Elizabethtown's 23 shots came in the first half and the score could have been even more lopsided in the visitors' favor if not for the work of GMU keeper Matt Chilcote. Chilcote made four saves in the half and eight for the game.

In the 59th minute, Waso provided insurance, as the Jays' lead jumped to 2-0. The freshman has scored a goal in four straight games and has yet to be held without a point in five career contests.

Head coach Skip Roderick earned his 490th victory, placing him 10 shy of 500, and the Blue Jays now have their first five-game winning streak since 2010. The boys in blue will try to keep their hot start alive Wednesday evening at 7, when they travel to Lancaster to face Franklin & Marshall for the Smith-Herr Boot.
