Softball holds on, advances to Landmark Championship

SELINSGROVE, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College softball utilized the momentum it built earlier in the day after upsetting top-seeded Susquehanna and continued its run through the Landmark Conference tournament after defeating the second-seed Moravian by a final of 7-6. E-town pumped out 15 hits with multi-hit efforts from five different players.

Becky Becher extended her hit streak to five games with a single to lead off the second game of the day for Elizabethtown (15-23). Kirstin Blass followed her all-conference teammate with a single of her own, which sent Becher to third. Two batters later, Jessica White kept her hit streak alive with an RBI single through the left side, putting the Jays up 1-0.

Moravian (31-5), second in the regional rankings and No. 24 in the country, put up two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead away from the Jays. Jenn Dalickas, the Player of the Year in the Landmark, smacked a solo homer in the second to extend the lead to 3-1.

Elizabethtown had its leadoff hitters on base in the third and fourth innings, but ultimately could not bring those runners home. After the Jays' half of the fourth, they were 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

The fifth inning turned the tables for the Jays, who were still down 3-1 at that point. With one out, Blass, Payton Marunich, White, and Kaylee Werner all reached based. White sent a two-run double down the left field line, scoring Blass and Marunich to tie the game at 3-3. Laura Tomasetti and Kelsey Brown added RBI singles to return the lead back to the Blue Jays, 5-3. E-town batted around in its four-run fifth.

Blass was on second for White in the sixth, and the senior slugger delivered her third hit of the game with an RBI base hit up the middle. Tomasetti brought White home with a two-out base knock to increase the advantage to four runs at 7-3.

The Greyhounds did not go down easily, pulling back a run in the sixth to stay within striking distance.

Down to its final out, Moravian got a two-run double to deep center to cut the deficit to a single run while having a runner in scoring position and the chance to tie the game with one swing of the bat. Keli Krause shut the door, however, getting a fly out to Becky Becher in center to end the game and send E-town to the championship game.

Moravian had swept Elizabethtown during the regular season and only allowed the Blue Jays to record ten hits between the two-game set. E-town's 15 hits were one short of its season-high.

Becher, Blass, Marunich, and Tomasetti had two hits apiece while White went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. White finished the day 6-for-9 with five RBIs. Krause won both starts today and moved to 7-8 on the season. She struck out five Moravian batters.

The softball team advances to its first conference championship game since 2008 when it was the Commonwealth Conference runner-up. Saturday's title tilt is scheduled for 2 p.m.
