Softball falls twice to No. 24 Moravian, finishes as Landmark runner-up

SELINSGROVE, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College softball team was vying for its first conference title since 1988 Saturday afternoon at Susquehanna University. E-town had a chance to go 3-0 in the Landmark Conference playoffs, but had to defeat 24th-ranked Moravian to do it. The Greyhounds beat the Jays 4-3 in their early afternoon matchup, setting up a winner-take-all game, which the Greyhounds also won, 12-2, in five innings.

GAME SIX
Moravian 4, Elizabethtown 3

After taking down both top-seeded Susquehanna and second-seeded Moravian (34-5) yesterday, Elizabethtown (15-25) had the momentum on its side going into Saturday's final. First, the Jays watched as Moravian faced off with Susquehanna in an elimination game, with the Greyhounds knocking out the Crusaders to set up the championship tilt with EC.

Moravian jumped ahead 2-0 in the first on a two-run single by Julie Siragusa.

Amanda Carisone retired Elizabethtown in order the first two innings before the Jays threatened in the third. With one out and runners on second and third, Carisone got the final two outs by way of strikeouts to keep E-town off the board.

The Greyhounds added another pair of runs in the third to double the lead to 4-0 and looked poised to send both teams to a game seven.

The Blue Jays showed their resilience, pulling a run back in the bottom of the fifth. Laura Tomasetti was on third and Kelsey Brown stood on second for Becky Becher, who singled through the left side to bring home Tomasetti.

Keli Krause held Moravian in check the final four innings to give Elizabethtown its chance at a rally.

Payton Marunich led off the bottom of the sixth with a single before the next batter, Jessica White, sent a home run to left field, plating two runs and making it a one-run game, 4-3, going into the seventh.

Kirstin Blass hit a one-out single to right in the seventh and moved into scoring position on a ground out, but Josie Novak, the Landmark Rookie of the Year, was able to get a pop out to end the game and force the game seven.

GAME SEVEN
Moravian 12, Elizabethtown 2 (F/5)

Becher led off the deciding game with a single to center field. A sacrifice bunt moved her to second and an illegal pitch advanced her to third for Marunich. Becher scored easily as Marunich doubled to right center to put E-town ahead 1-0 in the first.

Moravian answered in the bottom half of the opening frame with two runs. The Greyhounds added one in the third before blowing the game wide open with nine runs in the fourth.

Kaylee Werner homered, her second of the season, in the top of the fourth, which made the score 3-2 at that point. The Jays were unable to produce any runs in the fifth as the game was called, giving Moravian the Landmark Conference Championship.
