Softball swept by Ursinus

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College softball team had its chances to bring runs across home plate, but could not come up with some timely hits in Thursday's non-conference doubleheader with Ursinus. The Bears never trailed during either game and swept the Blue Jays by scores of 7-3 and 6-4.

GAME 1
Ursinus Lineup

1. Berry ss, 2. Goldstein 1b, 3. Heinke p, 4. Mercurio cf, 5. Hyman 3b, 6. Derella 2b, 7. Winay rf, 8. Watters dp, 9. Edelson c
E-town Lineup
1. Becher cf, 2. Blass ss, 3. Marunich 2b, 4. White 1b, 5. Werner rf, 6. Nowacki 3b, 7. Krause p, 8. Brown c, 9. McGill lf

The teams were even after two innings, with Ursinus (8-11) scoring in the top of the first and Elizabethtown (7-11) responding with a run in the bottom of the second. E-town's run came on Keli Krause's RBI single up the middle, scoring Kaylee Werner.

The Jays ran into some trouble in the top of the third. Krause had gotten to batters to pop up in the inning, and with two outs and two runners in scoring position, the Bears cashed in. Rachel Hyman drove a two-run double to right center, breaking the tie and putting Ursinus ahead 3-1. Casey Derella followed with a single that scored Hyman and the Bears led 4-1 after three innings.

Zoe Heinke kept the Elizabethtown bats at bay, keep the Jays scoreless over the course of the third, fourth, and fifth innings. E-town carved into Ursinus' lead in the sixth, however.

Payton Marunich was beaned by a pitch to start the inning. Jess White, the next batter, sent a double to right center, deep enough to allow Marunich to come all the way around and score. Jordan Nowacki drew a one-out walk to put two runners on for Laura Tomasetti, who had come in to relieve Krause. Tomasetti singled to center, driving home White from second.

Entering the seventh, E-town still trailed by four, 7-3, but had a running in position after White doubled to right field. With two outs already registered, Heinke recorded a game-ending strikeout to prevent the Jays' rally attempt.

White led Elizabethtown with her sixth multi-hit game of the season. Marunich, Werner, Krause, Tomasetti, and Kelsey Brown had one hit each.

GAME 2
Ursinus Lineup

1. Derella lf, 2. Goldstein 1b, 3. Heinke ss, 4. Mercurio cf, 5. Hyman 3b, 6. Winay p, 7. Berardo c, 8. Watters dp, 9. Gartenberg rf
E-town Lineup
1. Becher cf, 2. Blass ss, 3. Marunich 2b, 4. White 1b, 5. Werner rf, 6. Nowacki 3b, 7. Tomasetti p, 8. Brown c, 9. McGill

The second game seemed like a mirror-image of the first. Ursinus struck first only to have Elizabethtown answer. The only problem with that for the Jays was that the Bears were top the entire way through game one and did just the same to close out the sweep.

Delia Mercurio had three RBIs between her first two plate appearances, helping the Bears out to a 5-0 lead after the top half of the third

Kirstin Blass picked up two RBIs in the bottom half of the third frame with a double to center, scoring Becky Becher and Maeve McGill to make it 5-2.

Tomasetti, the Jays' game two starter, held Ursinus off the scoresheet in the fourth and saw E-town tack on another run to make it a two-run game at 5-3. Kelsey Brown reached on a fielding error, which allowed Kaylee Werner to score.

E-town had opportunities to tie the game, putting runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Ursinus starter Bridget Winay limited any potential damage, however.

Winay gave up a single to Becher and walked Blass, but was helped out by a double play and a fly out to get out of the fifth unscathed. The following inning, E-town was ready to strike again, but Winay got three consecutive groundouts and her infielders made the plays to keep Ursinus in front.

The Bears added a run in the top of the seventh to make the Blue Jays' comeback bid a little tougher. Becher started the rally with a walk and moved up to second on a groundout and made it to third as a result of a wild pitch. Werner singled through the left side with two outs to score the run, but Winay got one last groundout to end the game.

Elizabethtown finished the day with seven hits in each game. Werner went 3-for-4 in game two, with Becher, Blass, Nowacki, and McGill each picking up a hit in the 6-4 loss.

The softball team has a short turnaround as they head out to face former MAC rival Messiah tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
