Baseball shut out by Penn State-Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — In its final regular season game, the Elizabethtown College baseball team managed just four hits at Penn State-Harrisburg on Wednesday in non-conference action. The Lions put up two runs early on and did not allow E-town to cross the plate in a 2-0 win over the Jays. Brian Goodling struck out 14 for the Lions.

Elizabethtown (24-14) did not help itself, leaving nine runners on base over the duration of the game, including having the bases loaded twice.

Alex Holbert led off the fourth inning with a single, and moved on to second with one out after Luke Gatti reached on an error. Aaron Rahn was the second consecutive batter to reach base with a base knock to load them up. The Jays came out of the inning empty-handed though, as Goodling struck out two in a row to end the threat.

In the sixth, E-town was once again on the verge of breaking through, but Goodling stymied the Jays. Gatti walked and Rahn and Brian Portillo each got on by way of defensive errors. Like the fourth, Goodling got out of the inning unscathed with a strikeout to end it.

Penn State-Harrisburg (16-23) scored once in the first and once in the second off Zack Tomasko, but it would be the only two runs the Lions would get. Dylan Manning, Josh Sollenberger, and Richy Masciarelli combined to pitch the final five innings, not allowing a run and surrending just two hits between the three of them. Manning and Sollenberger each recorded two strikeouts.

Holbert, Rahn, Nick Lorenz, and Parke Martin had a hit apiece for E-town.

The baseball team, the three-seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Tournament, will travel to face two-seed Moravian. The best-of-three series begins Saturday, May 2, with two nine-inning games.
