White homers, softball swept by York (Pa.)

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College softball team had a pair of comeback attempts halted by York College on Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader at The Nest. The Spartans hung on for a one-run win in game one while outlasting the Blue Jays 9-7 in game two. Jess White belted her third homer of the season in the second game.

York (21-15) was up 3-0 after the third inning, getting a pair of runs in the second and one more in the third. Ashley Werner singled up the middle to score two in the top of the second inning. Vanessa Mendez singled to shortstop, allowing Katie Maloney to score to make it 3-0.

Kaylee Werner extended her hit streak to ten games in the fourth inning and helped Elizabethtown (13-19) get a run back. Werner, 1-for-3 in the game, singled to left center with White scoring on the play. Keli Krause brought E-town within a run at 3-2 with an RBI single.

Courtney Martin pitched all seven innings for the Spartans and held the Blue Jays scoreless over the final three innings to give York the game-one win.

Kirstin Blass, Laura Tomasetti, and Krause each had two hits apiece.

The scoring picked up in game two as York scored at least a run in six of the seven innings while the Jays brought a run or more home in four of seven innings.

The Spartans led 3-0 after their half inning in the third, but White cut into the lead with an RBI single to left center, plating Becky Becher. Becher knocked an RBI double to left the following inning.

Down 4-2 after Becher's run-scoring double, Blass drove the ball up the middle to score two more for Elizabethtown and knot the game up at 4-4.

A pair of hits left the field of play in the fifth, one for each team. Katie Maloney hit her first of the season for York while White smashed her third of the year to tie for the team lead. It was 5-5 after five innings.

The next four runs of the game belonged to York, who pushed the advantage to 9-5 going into the bottom half of the seventh.

Jordan Nowacki and Tomasetti each had a run batted in in the seventh, but Courtney Martin got a pop out to end the game and the Jays' rally attempt.

White went 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Blass was 1-for-4 with the two-run single. Becher and Nowacki also had two hits each.

The softball team wraps up conference play Saturday at Susquehanna. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
