Softball closes out Landmark play at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. — A week out from the Landmark Conference playoffs, the Elizabethtown College softball team and Susquehanna both had playoff seeding on the line in Saturday's league doubleheader at Sassafras Field. The Crusaders swept E-town by scores of 5-1 and 1-0 to earn the top seed in the conference tournament. A win could have locked up the third seed for the Jays, who will now wait upon results elsewhere to determine whether they are the three or the four.

GAME ONE
Susquehanna 5, Elizabethtown 1

Elizabethtown (13-21, 6-6 Landmark) faced one of the Landmark's top pitchers in Morgan Lewis in game one, and Lewis held the Blue Jays in check. E-town hit just 2-for-13 with runners on base and could only get one run off the Crusaders' ace.

The Jays were held hitless through the first four innings, but got something going in the fifth when Kaylee Werner doubled down the right field line to lead off the inning. The next batter, Jordan Nowacki, singled to left center, allowing Werner to score.

Nowacki and Maeve McGill were both in scoring position, but Lewis got a groundout to end the threat and maintain Susquehanna's 3-1 lead.

The Crusaders scored three in the second inning, but Laura Tomasetti held Susquehanna (28-5, 11-1 Landmark) in check over the next four to keep E-town in the game. SU managed to tack on two more runs in the sixth before Lewis closed out the game without any further damage.

Nowacki had two of the Jays' five hits. Kirstin Blass, Werner, and McGill had a hit apiece.

GAME TWO
Susquehanna 1, Elizabethtown 0

Keli Krause took a no-hitter into the fourth inning in game two as the Crusaders were unable to solve the junior righty. Krause retired the side in order in two of the first three innings, including striking out the side in the third.

While the Jays were able to connect on four hits before Susquehanna got its first, Crusaders' pitcher Jamie Fesinstine held E-town off the board as well.

Elizabethtown had a runner in scoring position in the first and fifth innings, but could do nothing with it. Like in game one, the Blue Jays struggled with runners on base.

Susquehanna, who had the chance to earn the top seed in the Landmark playoffs with a win, came through in the bottom of the sixth. Pinch hitter Anna Heggenstaller had the hit of the game that mattered the most with an RBI double to drive in the only run of game two.

Fesinstine struck out the first batter she faced in the seventh, and after a walk, got a game-ending double play to clinch the No. 1 seed for the Crusaders.
Becky Becher, Jess White, Jordan Nowacki, and Krause had one hit each. Krause finished with five strikeouts on the mound.

The softball team has one final doubleheader in the regular season, a non-conference two-game set, which is Tuesday, April 28 at Gettysburg. Games are scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m.
