Softball seniors come up big to help sweep Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College softball seniors had a day to remember Saturday in a doubleheader with Drew at The Nest. The Blue Jay seniors were recognized beforehand, and on their day, came up big in a big way to help E-town take both games from the Rangers and maintain playoff positioning in the Landmark.

Laura Tomasetti and Laura D'Ornellas were in a pitcher's duel through the first half of game one. Neither allowed the other's team to score a run until the fourth inning.

D'Ornellas helped her own cause with an RBI single to center in the fourth to bring home the first run of the day. It could have been two, but Becky Becher hit Jess White, who quickly turned and relayed the ball to Ashley Hullihan, who tug out the runner attempting to score on the hit.

Elizabethtown (12-14, 5-3 Landmark) proceeded to score four runs in the next half inning to take a 4-1 lead. Kaylee Werner singled home Payton Marunich on a 2-0 pitch with one out. Werner was on second after a ground out for Keli Krause, who singled up the middle, allowing Werner to score to make it 2-1 Jays. Tomasetti followed that up with an RBI double to right center and Maeve McGill made it three straight hits with a single to center before Becher knocked home Tomasetti from third with a two-out base hit.

Drew (6-24, 0-10 Landmark) returned the favor the following half inning with three runs to tie up the game. Meanwhile D'Ornellas held the Jays off the scoreboard and was in line for the win heading into the bottom of the seventh after the Rangers added two runs in the top half of the inning.

The Blue Jays were not in a position they haven't been before, in terms of looking for a walkoff victory. Game one Saturday was no different as E-town did just that.

Kirstin Blass was able to reach on an error and advance to second on a wild pitch. Jess White brought Blass home with a one-out RBI single. It was only fitting that a senior, in this case Werner, would come up with the walkoff hit.

On the first pitch of the at-bat Werner launched the ball high into the sunny sky. The left fielder was able to make a play on the ball, but it bounced off the glove and over the fence for the game-winning two-run home run, her first of the season and 16th of her career.

Becher, White, Werner, and Tomasetti, all seniors, had RBIs in the game. Werner had three by going 2-for-4 at the plate, as did Becher. Krause and Tomasetti each had two hits apiece. Tomasetti moved to 6-6 on the year, getting the win. She struck out two batters.

Game two was slow developing until the fourth inning. With both teams deadlocked at 0-0, Kelsey Brown continued her recent power surge, lifting a home run clear of the left field fence for her third of the season, a three-run shot. Werner and Jordan Nowacki both singled before Brown's two-out homer.

Those would be all the runs Keli Krause would need on the bump. The junior scattered six hits over seven innings, allowing an unearned run to move to 5-5. She struck out five.

Marunich and Nowacki also picked up RBIs in game two, meaning every senior had at least one run batted in on the day between the two games. Becher and Marunich each finished with two hits for the Jays.

The softball team faces another important series tomorrow when they travel to Catholic for a Landmark doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
