Softball clinches playoff spot, splits at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Elizabethtown College softball team will head to the postseason in the Landmark for the second straight season after splitting with Catholic on Sunday. E-town won game one, hanging on 5-4 before falling 1-0 in game two on a walkoff hit by the Cardinals.

Elizabethtown's (13-15, 6-4 Landmark) seniors were instrumental in the Jays' early lead in game one. Kaylee Werner and Jordan Nowacki both drew RBI walks, back-to-back, to put E-town ahead 2-0. Laura Tomasetti followed that up by reaching on an error, but still getting the RBI. Jess White scored on the play.

Catholic (11-13, 4-6 Landmark) got a run back in the bottom of the first, but Tomasetti would hold the Cardinals scoreless over the next five innings as the Jays built a 5-1 lead with runs in the fourth and sixth.

Werner hit a two-out double to right field in the fourth and scored when the next batter, Nowacki, also doubled to right. Werner singled home Kirstin Blass in the sixth for E-town's fifth run of the game.

The Cardinals didn't go quietly, plating three runs in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs, Tomasetti recorded the final out, getting her batter to strike out looking to end the game.

Elizabethtown's bats kept on hitting in game two, but the only issue was getting runs across the plate. The Jays outhit Catholic 8-2 but the game went to the seventh inning in a scoreless tie.

E-town had runners at third or at least in scoring position in six of the seven innings, but ended up leaving 11 runners on base.

Keli Krause only allowed two hits in six and two-thirds innings, but the second hit was the only one that mattered in the game. With a runner on first as a result of an error, Catholic got a double to right center, allowing the runner at first to score from first to win the game. Krause struck out four.

Becher went 3-for-4 in game one with a run scored while Werner was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. White was 2-for-4 at the plate in game two. Tomasetti was 2-for-3.

The Blue Jays will host Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday, April 21 for a non-conference doubleheader at The Nest beginning at 3 p.m.
