Men's lacrosse locks up top seed, sets program record for wins in a season

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Joe Clark tormented Washington & Jefferson for eight points as Elizabethtown set a new program record for wins in a season with its 13th, and locked up the top seed in the Landmark Conference Championships, with a 12-5 victory on Senior Day Saturday at Wolf Field.

Clark tied a career-high in racking up his second eight-point game of the season, including three in the first quarter (one goal, two assists), when the Blue Jays (13-2, 6-0 Landmark) scored six times to bury the Presidents. Russ LeClair accounted for three points of his own in the opening 15 on the same stat line as his sophomore teammate, and Kevin Meakim scored twice.

Midfielder Mike Specht, who recorded his 20th goal of the season to open the scoring, did the honors again in the second quarter. His goal 50 seconds into the period gave the Jays a 7-1 lead and they'd make it 8-3 before the half when Clark scored off Meakim's assist.

Saturday's outcome was never in doubt, even when W&J (8-7, 1-5 Landmark) drew within four on consecutive goals from Kyle Heinig and Bryan Whipkey in the second.

Clark poured in three more second half goals and Cody Larkin added a goal and an assist to expand E-town's lead to as many as nine, 12-3, with 8:19 to play.

Senior Jason Kelley, one of eight players honored prior to the final regular season home game, earned his first assist of the season on a bullet from Clark at 9:20 of the fourth that was behind Presidents' goalie Jacob Succop before he knew it.

In the cage, Chris Wenger added to his career-best total with 10 saves for his 11th win of the season. The Blue Jays increased their program record winning streak to 12 games and moved past the 2009 and 2010 teams, which both went 12-4, for most wins in a season.

The seniors had an all around great day. In addition to Kelley and Wenger, Matt Frey forced four turnovers and scooped up four ground balls, LeClair had three points and six ground balls, Dillon McDevitt caused a turnover and picked up three GBs, John Garbellano won a face-off and Connor Rowe saw meaningful minutes in the midfield. David Latimore, one of the team's top face-off men, was out of the lineup with an ankle injury.

Matt Rucci took care of face-offs with 10 wins on 19 tries. It was Rucci's fifth straight game with eight or more and third game with double-digit face-off wins this season.

Frey moved to within two caused turnovers of tying Mike Kenneally's school record of 99, and LeClair is five points shy of 100 for his career. They'll both have a chance to etch their names in the record books when the Blue Jays wrap up their regular season next Saturday at Drew.
