Softball powers its way to sweep of Lancaster Bible

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College softball team showed off its power both at the plate and on the mound to secure a sweep over Lancaster Bible in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at The Nest. The pair of wins also gave E-town its ninth straight season of double-digit victories. Kelsey Brown had a game-high four RBIs in game one while Jessica White had three RBIs in game two to lead the Jays.

Sporting just a 1-0 lead through the first two innings, it was the third and fourth frames that saw the Elizabethtown (10-14) offense break out to the tune of ten runs; four in the third and six in the fourth.

E-town started out the bottom half of the third with a ground out and fly out, meaning it did the damage all with two outs. Kaylee Werner reached on a single to center and moved up to second on a passed ball with Jordan Nowacki at the plate. Nowacki singled, moving Werner to third. Laura Tomasetti, the game-one starter, unleashed a double to right center, scoring both Werner and Nowacki to make it 3-0 Blue Jays.

Kelsey Brown, with Tomasetti standing on second, cracked a shot to left field that found its way over the fence for a two-run home run to make it 5-0. Brown hit her second homer of the game an inning later, her first career multi-HR game. She now has two on the season and nine RBIs, both of which surpass her freshman year totals.

On the mound, Tomasetti threw a two-hitter, striking out four in five innings as the Jays put up 11 runs to end it in the fifth. Tomasetti retired the side in order in the fifth to end the game and improve to 5-6 on the year.

GAME 2
Lancaster Bible Lineup

1. D'Arrigo 3b, 2. Wallace c, 3. Coffman 1b, 4. Collins p, 5. Morton cf, 6. Wright rf, 7. Hartline 2b, 8. Ort lf, 9. Kane ss
E-town Lineup
1. Becher cf, 2. Blass ss, 3. Marunich 2b, 4. Werner rf, 5. White 1b, 6. Nowacki 3b, 7. Krause p, 8. Hullihan c, 9. McGill lf

Keli Krause worked a no-hitter into the fifth only to have it broken up by Kellie Wright. Though Krause was holding Lancaster Bible (6-14) down, the Jays gave her one run of support through the first five innings. It was enough, however, as Krause piled up the strikeouts. She finished the game with 12, her highest K total since March 6, 2013 when she had 14 in Florida against Finlandia.

Krause ran into some trouble in the sixth, allowing a one-out double to Alicia Ort. A sac bunt had runners at second and third with two outs. All the Chargers needed was a base hit to potentially tie up and take the lead, but Krause got strikeout No. 10 to end the threat.

Like in game one, the Blue Jays were able to manufacture some runs with two outs. Kirstin Blass had reached on a fielding error and advanced to second with one out. Two batters later, Kaylee Werner drove a double to the center field fence, scoring Blass easily. Jessica White, next up, launched a deep ball to left field for her second homer of the season, a two-run shot to make it 4-0 and give E-town a little bit of breathing room.

Four runs was plenty enough for Krause, who would have only needed the one run. She struck out the first two batters of the seventh and got the final out on a pop up to end game two in favor of the Jays.

Werner, Nowacki, and Brown all had multi-hit efforts in game one while White was the only batter for Elizabethtown with more than one hit in game two. Krause moved her record to 4-5.

The softball team will host its Senior Day on Saturday, April 18 when they host Drew for a Landmark Conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
