Blue Jays shut out Susquehanna for first win

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – They've been close a number of times, but Tuesday the Elizabethtown men's tennis team finally put a 'W' next to its name, and did so in convincing fashion. The Blue Jays shut out Susquehanna, 9-0, for their first ever Landmark victory.

Three doubles teams combined to drop just one game between them for the visitors. Michael Yost and Evan Hinkley put the Jays ahead with an 8-0 win over Akshay Kripalani and Chib Onwunaka at third doubles, and they were quickly followed by another 8-0 victory from Ryan Caris and Nathan Dowling at No. 2.

Elizabethtown's (1-10, 1-4 Landmark) top two, Michael Cannon and Alex Machalick, registered their eighth win together this season, 8-1, over Ryan VanValin and Matthew Weller.

Singles belonged to the Blue and Gray as well.

No. 3 Yost and No. 4 Caris clinched Elizabethtown's first win with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 sweeps. Yost was a winner for the sixth time this season, as he defeated Andrew Parrish, and Caris extended his winning streak to two matches by downing Robert Lloyd.

The Blue Jays (1-10, 1-4 Landmark) continued to dominate the match with No. 2 Machalick cruising past Weller 6-0, 6-1 and No. 5 Dowling shutting down Kripalani 6-1, 6-2.

Cannon earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over VanValin in the top flight matchup, while No. 6 Hinkley triumphed 6-0, 6-2 over Onwunaka.

Elizabethtown came within a match of its first win Saturday, but Tuesday it got the monkey off its back. The Blue Jays have fallen by a 5-4 score four times this spring.

The Jays return to action at home against Stevenson Thursday at 4 p.m.
