Men's tennis swept by Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – Regionally-ranked Salisbury overpowered the Elizabethtown College men's tennis team Sunday afternoon, shutting out the Blue Jays 9-0, in a non-conference match at the SU Tennis Courts.

The Sea Gulls won their 15th match of the season with relatively little push back from an E-town side still in search of its first win. Salisbury dropped just five games in doubles play in picking up all three points.

No. 1 doubles featured the region's sixth-ranked duo of Daniel Albers and Eric Spangler going against the Blue Jays' (0-9) Michael Cannon and Alex Machalick. Cannon and Machalick managed to win a game, but SU cruised to the win as Albers became the program's all-time leader in doubles victories with his 67th.

Albers is also the 22nd-ranked singles player in the ITA Atlantic South Region, and he played like it, earning a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Cannon at No. 1.

Elizabethtown No. 2 Alex Machalick had to battle the Sea Gulls' (15-4) Eric Spangler, who entered the match ranked 25th in the region. Machalick couldn't get anything going in the first set, but stole three games in the second of a 6-0, 6-3 defeat.

No. 6 Evan Hinkley took seven games in a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Adam Goldberger.

Sophomore Ryan Caris took three games off of Shanon Gunther (6-1, 6-2) at No. 4.

The Blue Jays will feel the effects of their early season postponements this week. Already playing its second match in as many days on Sunday, E-town hosts Goucher Monday at 4 p.m. and plays every day this week except for Wednesday, a stretch of seven matches in eight days.
