Softball falls to Saint Vincent (Pa.), Misericordia

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Elizabethtown College softball team had a victory in its opening game of the day snatched away in the final inning by Saint Vincent (Pa.). The Blue Jays then fell to Misericordia in five innings.

Saint Vincent (6-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Breanne Wallace singled home Emily Duerr. Duerr and Courtney Patterson occupied first and second when Wallace knocked in Duerr.

Starting pitcher Keli Krause got the next two batters out via the strikeout. Needing a final out to end the inning and with the bases loaded, Krause got Sarah Swettlen to fly out to center field.

Elizabethtown (2-4) responded in the next half inning, tying the game up at 1-1. Kaylee Werner led off the bottom of the second with a single. After a fly out, Jess White stepped in and doubled to right center, scoring Werner from first.

The Bearcats climbed back on top in the third, getting a home run from Shelby Noel to take a 2-1 lead.

The Jays were held scoreless in the bottom of the third, but got the run back in the fourth. Payton Marunich singled and advanced to second on Werner's ground out. Jordan Nowacki put the ball in play to the shortstop, allowing Marunich to move up the third. Marunich then scored after an error on the play by the first baseman.

Krause continued mowing down the Saint Vincent batters, recording two strikeouts in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. She had ten in the game, the most since fanning ten on March 24, 2013 against Widener as a freshman.

E-town took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Becky Becher got on base and Krause moved her up to second with a sac bunt. Marunich then singled to get Becher to third. With two outs in the inning, Nowacki came through with an RBI single.

Down to its final out in the game, the Bearcats got a timely hit from Ally Panzella, who doubled to left center, bringing home two runs to return the lead back to Saint Vincent, 4-3.

The Blue Jays were able to get a runner on base in the seventh when Laura Tomasetti singled, but Laken Lyon wrapped up her complete game victory by getting the final two outs without giving up the run.

Marunich had E-town's only multi-hit effort of the game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Nowacki and White had the Jays' RBIs. Krause pitched six innings, giving up three runs with the ten K's. She faced one batter in the seventh before being relieved by Ashley Hullihan.

Elizabethtown lost its second game of the day, 10-1, to Misericordia (4-4) in five innings.

The softball team has Thursday off before playing a doubleheader on Friday against Cornell (Iowa) at 1 and 5 p.m.
