Werner extends hit streak, Blue Jays swept by Cornell (Iowa)

CLERMONT, Fla. — Kaylee Werner has hit safely in six of the eight games the Elizabethtown College softball team has played during its spring break trip to Florida. Despite being swept by Cornell (Iowa) on Friday by scores of 12-4 and 10-1 (F/6), Werner extended her hit streak to five games.

Elizabethtown (2-6) found itself down 5-0 right away after the top of the first inning, but Jordan Nowacki helped get a run back in the bottom half of the inning.

Becky Becher walked to lead off the E-town inning. Payton Marunich moved her up to second with a one-out single. The pair advanced a base on a groundout and then Jordan Nowacki singled home Becher to put the Jays on the board.

Laura Tomasetti didn't allow a run over the next two innings and in the bottom of the third, Werner doubled home Marunich and Becher to bring Elizabethtown within a pair of runs at 5-3.

The Rams tacked on two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to go up 10-3. Werner added another RBI on a groundout in the fifth.

Marunich finished 2-for-3 in the 12-4 loss. Werner and Nowacki had a hit apiece. Becher had two runs scored. Tomasetti fell to 1-2 on the season.

Cornell (2-0) jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning of the second game. By the fifth inning, they led 7-0 before the Jays broke up the shut out.

With two outs in the top of the inning, Marunich was hit by a pitch. Werner then reached safely for the fifth straight game after singling up the middle. Nowacki followed that up with her team-leading fourth RBI, doubling to center and allowing Marunich to score.

It would be the only run the Jays would get as the Rams scored once in the fifth and Renata Rankin's two-run homer in the sixth ended the game with a 10-1 final.

The softball team has two remaining games beginning with New York University Saturday morning at 9 a.m. They will face Roger Williams at 11 a.m.
