Moravian denies men's tennis first win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles helped Elizabethtown men's tennis split the individual matches Sunday, but Moravian swept doubles en route to a 6-3 victory over the Blue Jays at the Alumni Courts in their Landmark Conference debut.

No point came easy against conference unbeaten Moravian (7-4, 3-0 Landmark). All three Elizabethtown winners rallied from a set down to win marathon matches, two of which needed extended super tiebreakers.

Freshman Michael Yost turned the tables on Dan Schmucker at No. 4, responding to a 6-1 defeat in the opening set with a 6-1 win in the second. Yost pulled away in the tiebreaker for a 10-4 win and the Blue Jays' (0-5, 0-1 Landmark) first point of the afternoon.

No. 5 Nathan Dowling followed with a 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 victory over Giovanni Lombardi, and Evan Hinkley held off C.J. Widdifield 2-6, 7-6 (2), 12-10 in a battle at sixth singles.

Sophomore Alex Machalick gave the Greyhounds' John Wylie a run at No. 2, also bouncing back from a first set loss to take the second. Wylie swept the third though to take the point for the visitors 6-1, 5-7, 6-0.

Yost and classmate Marty Rodgers won four games at No. 3 doubles in an 8-4 loss to Schmucker and David Wilson, but Moravian was in control at No. 1 and No. 2, winning both matches by an 8-1 score.

Elizabethtown will take on Susquehanna in Selinsgrove Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
