Baseball wins in Landmark debut, deals Catholic first loss

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Elizabethtown baseball is growing fond of the third inning. Thursday, the Blue Jays hit a pair of home runs in a win over Lebanon Valley. Saturday evening they scored a season-high nine runs in the frame to set the stage for an 11-4 win over Catholic at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in their Landmark debut.

E-town sent 14 batters to the plate in the third to put the Cardinals in a deep hole after the home team tied the game in the bottom of the second.

Though the Jays' first two hits in the inning went for extra bases when Alex Holbert tripled –and scored on an error– and Tyler Weary doubled, it was small ball that carried Elizabethtown (9-3, 1-0 Landmark) through the rest of the inning. Weary eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the visitors a 3-1 lead and Ryan Schamp was plunked with the bases loaded. Frank Ragozzino, Kyle Fackler, Holbert and Luke Gatti added RBI singles in the inning, and Ryan Shirk had an RBI ground out.

Gatti stayed red-hot, going 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs, raising his average to .447 and moving his hit streak to 13 games. His first inning single scored Weary with the game's first run.

Elizabethtown finished its scoring in the fifth on a Gatti sacrifice fly.

Starting pitcher Kristopher Davis improved to 3-0 on the season, striking out seven over 6.1 innings and allowing four runs (three earned). Davis has whiffed six or more batters in each of his starts and done it in commanding fashion. With no walks allowed Saturday, Davis owns a 28:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 21 innings.

Taras Letnaunchyn and Anthony Lippy teamed up for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Blue Jays.

Offensively, Weary registered three hits and scored two runs for the Blue and Gray. Holbert, Ragozzino and Shirk finished with two hits apiece.

Catholic's Jack Hennessy took the loss, giving up seven earned runs on six hits in just 2.1 innings. The Cards (8-1-1, 3-1 Landmark) received three hits from Brett Padula and Wyatt Schmidt, and two RBIs from John Palladino.

Elizabethtown and Catholic conclude their season with a doubleheader Sunday. Game one begins at noon.
