Hullihan throws three-hit shutout vs. Cabrini; Jays fall to Adrian on walk-off homer

CLERMONT, Fla. — Ashley Hullihan's first start of the season couldn't have gone better. She silenced Cabrini for seven innings and then watched her teammates give her a 1-0 win on a walk-off sacrifice fly Monday. Elizabethtown came within two outs of sweeping the day, but Adrian hit a walk-off three-run homer to down the Jays, 5-3.

Hullihan struck out five, allowed just three hits and a walk in earning her first career shutout and complete game.

In a game featuring fewer than 10 hits between the two teams, Cabrini (1-1) was first to get a runner past second base. Kaitlyn Cooper singled to lead off the fourth, stole her second base of the day and went to third on a ground out. She would be left stranded when Amber Dietrich lined out to Kaylee Werner at short to end the inning.

The Blue Jays (2-2) put pressure on late, getting runners to second and third in the fourth and sixth innings. The sixth inning was especially promising after Becky Becher singled up the middle and Keli Krause doubled to center, but the next three E-town batters went down in order to end the threat.

Persistance finally paid off in the seventh, though. Jessica White walked and Kelsey Brown's second hit of the game pushed White over to third. With one out, Kirstin Blass drove the first pitch she saw deep enough into left field to score White with the game-winning sac fly.

Krause also had two hits for the Jays.

In the early morning game, E-town and Adrian (3-0) were each able to get a runner on base in the first and second innings, but neither team could get a run home.

The Blue Jays cashed in in the top of the third. After Blass walked, Becher moved her up to second on the sacrifice. With one and a runner in scoring position, Krause doubled to left center, scoring Blass to put E-town up 1-0.

Laura Tomasetti kept the shutout going through four innings despite a threat from Adrian. Karissa DeVore singled then moved up to second on a ground out. K'ya Toles-Burton singled to put two runners on base with only one out. Tomasetti got out of the inning, however, with a line out and ground out.

In the top of the fifth, the Jays' first three batters got on base, but two outs later no runs had crossed the plate. Elizabethtown didn't come out of the inning empty-handed though, as Ashley Hullihan was able to score on an error.

Adrian cut its deficit in half when DeVore homered in the bottom of the sixth to nix the shutout opportunity for Tomasetti.

E-town got that run back in the next half inning on Tomasetti's sacrifice fly, scoring Werner.

With an out recorded in the bottom of the seventh, Adrian rallied behind an RBI single from Jessica Sarch and a three-run homer from Kaitlyn Hinojosa, which ended the game, 5-3, on the walk-off.

Elizabethtown takes a break Tuesday before resuming play Wednesday with games against Saint Vincent and Misericordia.
