York (Pa.) emerges with 5-4 win over MTEN in spring opener

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – York (Pa.) broke a 3-3 tie by taking 2-of-3 doubles matches to beat the Blue Jay men's tennis team, 5-4, Monday in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Michael Cannon and Alex Machalick picked up a pair of wins for Elizabethtown (0-1).

Cannon beat George Sosa 6-1, 6-0 at first singles, with Machalick following his lead 7-5, 6-4 over Jake Greenstein at No. 2.

No. 6 Nathan Dowling also put in a good showing, holding off Zach Hanson 6-3, 6-3. The Blue Jays trailed 3-1 before Dowling and Machalick wrapped up their matches, putting the conclusion up for grabs in doubles.

E-town got the lead back over the unbeaten Spartans (5-0) when Cannon and Machalick won at No. 1 doubles against Daniel Erk and Kaltrin Bullaj, 8-4.

YCP controlled second and third doubles, however, winning both by 8-2 scores.

The win was just the third for the Spartans in 21 tries against the blue and gray dating back to 1981.

Elizabethtown resumes its spring break trip tomorrow at noon against St. John Fisher.
