Baseball falls to Dickinson in home opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College baseball team led briefly in its non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon against Dickinson at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium. The lead didn't last long, though, as the Red Devils tacked on runs in the third, fourth, and ninth innings to claim an 11-2 win over the Blue Jays.

Nick Gulla took to the mound for Elizabethtown (7-3) and mowed down Dickinson (3-8) in order to start the game. Gulla threw 12 pitches to fan all three batters, getting Austin Sumners, Robbie Thompson, and Ryan Dolan to strike out swinging.

The Red Devils scored in the top of the second, but E-town came right back to answer, taking the lead with a pair of two-out RBIs. With one out in the inning, Ryan Schamp reached safely as the shortstop's throw was wide of the bag. Schamp was still at first when Ryan Shirk launched a triple to center field that landed just shy of the fencing. Schamp made it all the way around to score, tying the game at 1-1. Kyle Fackler stepped into the box next and brought home Shirk on a 2-2 count.

After a run to tie the game in the third, Dickinson was back at it in the fourth inning. The first two batters reached base on a single and hit by pitch. Mike DeVivo moved the runners up a base with a sac bunt. Benn Parker then cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left field. The Red Devils led 5-2 after four.

From there, Dickinson starter Garrett Kurtz settled into the game and held Elizabethtown scoreless. After giving up the two runs in the second, Kurtz did not allow another, going seven innings, scattering eight hits and striking out four. Relievers Mo Felt, Matt Cowell, and Cristian Acosta did not allow a hit in two innings or work.

Dickinson added six runs in the top of the ninth to blow the game open.

Tyler Weary and Luke Gatti each finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Fackler, Alex Holbert, Sean Jones, and Shirk accounted for the other four hits for E-town. Gulla was saddled with the loss, falling to 1-1. He struck out six batters in four innings or work.

The baseball team will host another non-conference matchup when Lebanon Valley visits tomorrow afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
