Softball splits on opening day of the season

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Elizabethtown College softball team began its 2015 campaign in Florida on Sunday with a pair of games. The Blue Jays fell to Aurora (Ill.) before coming back to beat DeSales in its second game of the day.

Elizabethtown (1-1) had a tough time trying to solve Aurora (1-0) pitcher Vanessa Hartzell, who didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning when Jordan Nowacki led off with a single.

The Spartans offense did its damage early on, with four runs in the first and two more in the second inning to jump out 6-0 on the Jays. Hartzell only needed one of those runs as Aurora (Ill.) added on a run in the fifth inning to end the game early, 8-0 in five innings. Hartzell had eight strikeouts in five innings of work.

E-town rebounded offensively against DeSales (1-1). In the bottom of the first, the bases were loaded for Jess White. Keli Krause drew a one-out walk, Payton Marunich was hit by a pitch, and Kaylee Werner drew a second walk to fill the bases with Blue Jays.

In the clean-up spot, White singled to right field, bringing home Krause. Nowacki made it back-to-back singles with a base knock through the left side, scoring Werner.

Laura Tomasetti was on the mound for the Jays and she shut down the Bulldogs. The senior didn't allow a hit through the first three innings and added to her own effort at the plate.

After two runs had already crossed the plate for Elizabethtown in the bottom half of the third inning, Tomasetti drive in two more with a double to left. Kirstin Blass moved Tomasetti up to third with a single, then stole second base with Becky Becher at the plate. Becher hit a two-run double to center to complete the Blue Jays' six-run third. They led 8-0 after three.

DeSales managed to break through in the top of the fifth to keep the game going on Kayla Adanalian's two-run double. It was the only runs of the game for the Bulldogs.

Tomasetti closed out DeSales over the final two innings for her first complete game and win of the season. She finished with four strikeouts.

Krause and Werner had two hits apiece for the Jays. Tomasetti and Becher knocked in two runs each. White, Nowacki, and Kelsey Brown had the other RBIs.

The softball team will play another doubleheader on Monday, March 2. They play Adrian (Mich.) at 9 a.m. before an 11 a.m. meeting with Cabrini.
