Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball remains in playoff picture with win over Goucher

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — A day in which the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team honored its seniors ended on a good note. E-town never trailed in its 59-41 Landmark Conference win over visiting Goucher Saturday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays needed the victory to keep its playoff hopes alive and did so behind the play of Emily Young, Rachel Forjan, and Alyssa Aichele, who all were in double figures. Young led the team with 12 points.

It was befitting that on Senior Day, two of the Jays' three senior combined to score the first 16 points for Elizabethtown (15-5, 8-5 Landmark) as they led 16-8 nearly midway through the first half. Young scored ten of her team-high 12 points in the first six minutes of the game. Taylor Alwine added the other six, including the first basket of the game on an assist from Young.

Goucher (4-16, 0-12 Landmark) hung around in the early goings, keeping the Jays within six. Marissa Gingrich's free throws extended E-town's lead to nine, the largest of the game to that point, at 20-11. Briana Bull and Bri Prince helped the Gophers back into it, cutting the deficit to four on Bull's layup with 8:23 to go in the first half. From there on out, Goucher would get no closer.

Forjan got going late in the first half, hitting her first shot of the game at the 7:12 mark, connecting on a jumper off Emily Martin's dish. She followed that up with her first trey of the contest, which she cashed in after Krissy Pennell came up with a steal and then the assist to Forjan. The junior guard hit back-to-back threes on consecutive possessions to send E-town into the half up 15, 36-21.

Aichele recorded five of the Jays' first ten points of the second half, with a made jumper and three-pointer. Her trey at 14:50 extended the lead to 21. Elizabethtown kept it over 20 for the next six minutes, but allowed the Gophers to take a chunk out of it by going scoreless for four minutes. By that time, however, the hole was dig big for Goucher to dig itself out.

Despite being outshot by Goucher (42.9 percent), E-town (35.2 percent) racked up 22 points off 22 turnovers and had a 13-2 edge in second chance points. Elizabethtown controlled the glass, outrebounding the Gopher 45-28, including 19 offensive rebounds. The Jays also had 17 points from the foul line.

Forjan and Aichele both contributed 11 points, to join Young (12 points) in double figures. Forjan added six assists, Young had seven rebounds, and Alwine ended with nine points and a team-high nine boards. Pennell had a game-high five steals.

The victory keeps Elizabethtown a half-game ahead of Moravian for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Landmark Conference. E-town is one game behind Catholic for third with two league games remaining. The Blue Jays' game at Moravian is looming, but first they will finish out the non-conference schedule on Wednesday, February 11 at Muhlenberg before heading to Moravian next Saturday. E-town's game with the Mules is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
