GRANTHAM, Pa. – Three second-half goals from
Russ LeClair enabled Elizabethtown to erase a pair of deficits against Messiah Saturday afternoon, but the Falcons got a defensive stop late in the fourth quarter to prevail 6-5.
LeClair, a senior from Elkridge, Md., rallied the Blue Jays (1-2) from two goals down in the fourth with back-to-back strikes in the first 1:03 to tie the game 4-4.
When Messiah (1-1) went ahead on a goal by Drew Pagenkopf at the 8:34 mark, LeClair again responded. This time it was off a pass from
Joe Clark on the man advantage with 7:10 left.
Neither side had much luck finding the net in the first two quarters.
Elizabethtown took its only lead of the game less than four minutes in when
Jason Clough found
Kevin Meakim a man up for the freshman's second goal of the season.
The Falcons' Justin Bradley evened the score midway through the period. Messiah added the only goal of the second from Blake Knobloch (3:54) to take a 2-1 lead at half.
Chris Wenger stopped 10 shots, the second time he's made double-digit saves in three games this season. Wenger was especially good at the start, making four saves in the first quarter.
Clark finished with a goal and an assist for the Blue Jays.
Luke Stephens also assisted on a goal.
Elizabethtown played a deliberate and discaplined game for the better part of the afternoon. The Jays committed just one penalty and only had nine turnovers through three quarters.
Seven of the Jays' 16 turnovers came in the fourth, however, including one on their final offensive possession with less than a minute to go.
The one-goal loss was E-town's third in a row to Messiah in Grantham going back to 2011. Two of those defeats have come in overtime.
Messiah was also helped by the efforts of Brady Marburger, who won 10-of-13 face-offs. The Falcons held an 11-4 advantage at the dot in the game.
Brooks Arnold started in goal and made five saves before halftime, but the win went to Sam Stengel, who allowed four goals in the final two quarters, but was in the cage when the game-winner was scored by Chris Bry with 3:51 to play.
Elizabethtown heads to Randolph Thursday for a 7 p.m. face-off.
