Blue Jays bury Ferrum 10-2

FERRUM, Va. – Don't talk about a sophomore slump to Joe Clark, because he's showing no signs of slowing down. The Hershey grad scored five more points Saturday on four goals and an assist to lift Elizabethtown over Ferrum, 10-2.

Clark scored 38 points during a freshman season that saw him win Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year honors. He's well on his way to bettering that total with 16 points in four games this year.

Clark broke through with his first goal of the afternoon midway through the second quarter and went on to add two more in the third and one in the fourth. His third of the afternoon and 11th of the year, at 6:47 of the third, marked his second hat trick this season and fourth of his career.

It was another sophomore who got the Blue Jays (2-2) up and running Saturday, however. Cody Larkin accounted for both of E-town's first quarter goals, opening the scoring at 8:01 from Clark and finishing a pass from Russ LeClair a little less than four minutes later.

Elizabethtown smothered the Panthers (2-4), limiting them to 12 shots on the afternoon. It was the fewest shots allowed by the Blue Jays in four seasons and tied for the fourth fewest allowed in a game in team history.

Both Ferrum goals came out of the pocket of Tyler Fullem. Fullem's second quarter goal briefly cut Elizabethtown's lead to 3-1, but LeClair answered 2:36 before halftime to restore the visitors' three-goal lead.

The Jays' defense, along with goalie Chris Wenger, were superb. Senior Matt Frey caused three turnovers and sophomore Luke Stephens two; Wenger stopped six Panther shots.

All four goal scorers for the Blue and Gray had multiple goals, led by Clark's four. Larkin, LeClair and Mike Specht registered two-goal afternoons.

Elizabethtown was 12-of-13 on clears and edged Ferrum in ground balls, 26-25. The Blue Jays, who will stay in Virginia for a game at Randolph tomorrow at noon, have held an opposing offense to two goals or less at least once  in every season since 2009.
