Wrestling challenges No. 8 Messiah in defeat

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Mike Lammer worked his fifth major decision of the year and the Blue Jay wrestling team had once-beaten No. 8 Messiah down 13-10 with four matches left, but the Falcons received two falls in those last four matches to put a small damper on Senior Night, 25-16, Friday at Thompson Gymnasium.

Defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Kaleb Loht used six takedowns, including three in the first period to defeat Chad Lammer, 15-7, and give the Falcons (18-1) an early 4-0 lead.

Mike Lammer picked the Blue Jays (4-12) up almost immediately, going on a scoring spree of his own to major decision Adam Peris, 14-5, at 149. Lammer trailed 2-1 going into the second period, but a takedown in the final minute and a near pin put him in front 6-3. Two additional takedowns and a second 3-point near-fall furthered the match in the Ephrata native's favor.

Fresh off a third-place showing at the Messiah Open last Saturday, rookie Chris Kummerer wrestled up at 157 for the first time in his career. The results were positive, as Kummerer used a late first period takedown and a reversal in the final minute of the third to beat Josh Toal 5-3.

Prior to the match, E-town honored seniors Collin James, Jordan Moser, Jeremy Rieth, Jared Weaver and Zeke Zimmer. James and Weaver (injury) were out of the lineup, but Zimmer was first to get his shot on the mat in his last ever home match.

The team's career active wins leader didn't disappoint, racking up four takedowns and two escapes for a 10-6 win over Ben Wise. It was Zimmer's 75th career victory and team-leading 24th this season, matching his career-high for wins in a season, set back in 2012-13 (24-10).

Luke Fernandez followed with a 9-2 decision over Jeremy Bailes at 184 and Bryan Pflanz continued to wrestle well with a 6-1 decision against Marshall Myers at 133.

The Blue Jays led Messiah 13-10 with four bouts left, but the visitors got big points from pins at 197 by Kyle Koser and 125 by No. 2 Lucas Malmberg, last year's Mideast Region champion and national runner-up.

Messiah's ability to collect bonus points was the difference in the match between the two longtime rivals. While both sides collected five wins, the Falcons gained 10 bonus points to E-town's one.

In exhibition matches, senior Jordan Moser and junior John Archangelo both registered pins. Moser downed William Korzeniewski in 1:12, while Archangelo needed just 60 seconds to put away Tyler Kishimoto.

Elizabethtown will conclude the regular season with a dual at Muhlenberg next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
