Men's basketball drops Landmark opener at Juniata, 63-47

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Brandon Martinazzi and Marcus Lee teamed up for 43 points and Juniata led wire-to-wire Wednesday night, dealing Elizabethtown men's basketball a 63-47 loss in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams.

The Blue Jays' hallmark was their ability to protect the ball, as they committed a season-low eight turnovers. That wasn't enough to curb a hot-shooting Eagles side that connected on 53.2% of its shots (25-of-47) and 53.8% of its 3-point attempts (7-of-13). Martinazzi carried the load in the first half, scoring 15 of his game-high 23 points, while Lee netted 12 of his 20 after halftime.

Justin Fleming's 3-pointer on Juniata's first offensive possession set the hosts on their way. The unbeaten Eagles (6-0, 1-0 Landmark) never trailed in the contest, leading by as many as 10 in the first half and 17 in the second.

Elizabethtown (2-6, 0-1) fought back from a 7-2 hole early to get within 7-6 on two Josh Eden free throws and were down just three, 17-14, when Jake Sweger made 1-of-2 at the charity stripe with 6:16 to go in the first half. Juniata outscored the Jays 13-6 over the next 5:30, though, to open a 30-20 advantage.

Eden briefly snipped the Juniata lead to eight, 32-24, 48 seconds into the second half, but Lancaster County native Seth Brewer got to the tin for two on the Eagles' next offensive trip and their lead never dipped below 10 again.

Matt Lapkowicz led the Blue Jays with 13 points, extending his run of games in double figures to seven. Eden and Tommy James followed with eight each and Matt Lane seven.

Lee came up a rebound shy of a double-double, settling for 20 points and nine boards. Martinazzi shot a blistering 6-of-8 from downtown and five Eagles recorded five or more rebounds to give them a 36-24 edge on the glass.

E-town will turn its focus to final exams next week before Merchant Marine visits Thompson Gymnasium for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday, Dec. 12.
