Men's basketball falls to Washington (Md.) 77-67

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown College men's basketball dropped to 0-4 on the season Saturday with a 77-67 setback against Washington (Md.) at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays were led by Matt Lapkowicz's 16 points and also got 11 from Matt Ziegler.

Washington connected for nine 3-pointers in the contest and put three starters in double figures. Joey Shelton went for 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while James Drury had 18. The Shoremen (1-2) used a 17-6 run that started midway through the first half to open a 14-point lead with 4:48 to go. Five different players knocked down shots from the outside for the visitors, as they hit seven in the half altogether.

Shelton and Pat Morgan each had nine first-half points, Drury added seven and Kevin McCormick six on 2-of-2 shooting from 3-point range.

Elizabethtown (0-4) built a bit of momentum going into the half on consecutive threes by Ziegler and Lapkowicz, the latter coming as the buzzer sounded, to make it a 10-point game, 44-34, at the break.

But, just as quickly as E-town cut into Washington's lead, the Shoremen snatched it right back. Six points from Tas Dixon pushed Washington on a 13-2 run to start the second half and the Shoremen sat on a comfortable 57-36 lead with 16:37 remaining.

The Blue Jays would trail by double figures for almost the entire half, getting as close as nine, 67-58, with 5:23 to go on two Josh Eden free throws, before the Shoremen rattled off the next five to restore a 14-point cushion.

Peter Harding scored a career-high nine points in 17 minutes for the Blue and Gray, while Jake Sweger and Jamil Pines-Elliott each finished with seven. Ziegler blocked three shots and Elizabethtown stuffed seven Shoremen shots on the afternoon, its most in a game since blocking seven against Stevenson Jan. 22, 2014.

The Blue Jays shot 43.9% from the field Saturday, with Washington checking in just a bit better at 47.6%. Despite making 13 free throws, Elizabethtown could not find an answer to Washington's outside shooting. The Shoremen canned nine 3-pointers in the contest and the Jays were just 4-of-17 from deep.

Elizabethtown plays its third straight on its home floor Tuesday at 7 p.m., against Wilkes.
