Blue Jays recognize seven seniors, split Halloween Tri-Match

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Elizabethtown College volleyball team paid tribute to its 2015 senior class Saturday and sent them out with a split in Saturday's Halloween Tri-Match at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays swept Alvernia 3-0, before dropping a heartbreaker to SUNY Cortland, 3-2, in the finale.

Megan McNaul tied a career-high with 12 kills and Juliana Mowen had nine for the Blue Jays (18-14), who controlled much of the first two sets and then staged a late comeback to sweep 25-20, 25-16, 28-26.

However, it wasn't the kills, digs or aces drawing the loudest ovation. Senior middle hitter Karley Ice was able to return to the court for the first time since suffering a torn ACL back on Sept. 11, as part of the starting lineup and opened the match with a serve before leaving to resounding cheers and a few tears as well.

Freshman Janae Moran chipped in with eight kills on 22 attempts, while Anna Simpson had five. Shannon Deck registered a match-high 19 digs and Steph High a match-high 29 assists as E-town improved to 7-0 all-time against Alvernia.

The Crusaders nearly stole the third set, leading by as many as seven (18-11). Alvernia had seven set points, starting at 24-19, but could not put the Jays away. A trio of errors and kills by Moran and Mowen evened the score at 24.

When Alvernia took a 25-24 lead, E-town responded with a kill from Moran. The visitors again jumped in front 26-25, but Victoria Leidy's kill locked the score again. The Blue Jays would finally put it away with an ace from Brynne Kirsch and a ball handling error by the Crusaders.

While Saturday was for celebrating the seniors, the SUNY Cortland match showed that there is plenty to be optimistic about in the future, too.

Mackenzie Garner, Sarah Schneider and Moran all finished with 16 kills and the Blue Jays had 61, their fourth highest total, in the match.

High collected her 29th career double-double with 51 assists and 10 digs for an Elizabethtown side that jumped out to a one set lead by taking the opener 25-23. Cortland responded with a 25-20 win in the second and the Blue Jays struggled to get going in the third, falling 25-12.

Randall Kreider's club would not go down without a fight, however, winning the fourth 25-19 and leading in the fifth before Cortland rallied for a 15-12 win and the match.

Leidy (seven kills) and Simpson (five) supplied offense behind the big three. Deck once again led all players with 21 digs, wrapping up her career with 1,141. High closed the book on her time as a Blue Jay with 2,250 assists, good for fifth most in program history. Her 852 assists this season and 8.69 per set were both career-highs.

The Red Dragons (19-16) got a double-double of 14 kills and 13 digs from Samantha Czeczotka and 12 kills from Amanda May. Czeczotka also had five block assists as SUNY Cortland finished with eight denials. Melanie McGuirk had the hot hand from the service line with seven aces and led the team with 18 digs.

Setter Liz Roberts put forth a double-double of 43 assists and 13 digs.

Elizabethtown's seven seniors honored prior to the Alvernia match were: Deck, High, Ice, Kirsch, Leidy, McNaul and Mowen.

The Blue Jays finish the 2015 season with an 18-14 record, their 10th winning season in 14 under Kreider.
