No. 13 Blue Jays complete perfect conference slate, down Scranton 2-0

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – No. 13 Elizabethtown men's soccer scored a goal in each half and got two helpers from Gilbert Waso, finishing off a perfect regular season in the Landmark Conference with a 2-0 shutout of Scranton Saturday afternoon at Ira R. Herr Field.

The Blue Jays completed their first unblemished run through conference play for the first time since 1996, when they went 7-0-0. The last time E-town completed a regular season without a conference loss was a 6-0-1 effort in the Commonwealth in 2002.

Sam Feehrer gave the Blue and Gray a 1-0 lead just before half when he slotted a ball into the lower left corner. Waso, the marked man for opposing defenses, set up the goal.

Elizabethtown (16-1-1, 8-0 Landmark) would add to its lead in the 59th minute when Waso's cross was put into the upper right corner by Jeff Light. The two forwards have thrived off one another this season. Light's goal was his ninth, tying him with Waso for the team lead. The Hershey native has provided E-town with secondary scoring it so desperately needs if it is going to make a long postseason run.

Waso, who increased his point total to 26 with a pair of assists Saturday, has been held without a goal since Oct. 7 against Susquehanna, a span of six games. But, in that time, he's also picked up five assists, highlighting his playmaking abilities and daring opponents to pick their poison.

Blue Jays' keeper Rodrigo Barrera stopped four shots for his career-high eighth shutout of the season. Barrera, named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 Team Thursday along with senior teammate Martin Fevre, dropped his goals against average to 0.65 and now has 63 saves and a save percentage of .851 on the season.

Fevre and Jack Rudy, who have started on defense for Skip Roderick since their freshman seasons, were part of yet another clean sheet for the Jays. The duo has been part of 28 shutouts over the last four seasons.

Light and Scranton's A.J. Nardone were credited with a game-high four shots. No other Blue Jay or Royal had more than one. Barrera's counterpart, Eric Hintz, made four saves in the loss.

Elizabethtown, which had secured the top seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Championships well ahead of Saturday's game, increased its win streak to 10 games. It's the first time since 2010 that the Blue Jays have achieved a 10-game winning streak (11 in 2010) and just the second time they've done it since 2000.

Prior to Saturday's game, the 2015 senior class of Barrera, Fevre, Cal Graziano, Rudy and Shane Votto were honored during a short ceremony.

The Blue Jays will face Catholic in a semifinal game Wednesday at 7 p.m. E-town defeated the Cardinals 5-2 at Herr Field back on Sept. 19.
