Light's hat trick sends No. 6 men's soccer to Landmark Championship

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Jeff Light's natural hat trick and Steve Eneme's fourth goal against Catholic this season pushed No. 6 Elizabethtown men's soccer into its first Landmark Conference championship game with a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals Wednesday evening at Ira R. Herr Field.

E-town has exploded for nine goals in two matchups with the Cardinals this fall, both of which came on the Blue Jays' home field. The hosts sprung for a hat trick in each game, Eneme providing one during the regular season on Sept. 19 and Light building upon a stellar junior season with the second of his career Wednesday.

Gilbert Waso and the Jays were quick to pressure fourth-seeded Cathoilc (7-10-2), taking four of the first five shots in the opening 12 minutes. CUA keeper Zachery Tashjy was up to the task, making three of his six saves to keep the game scoreless.

At the other end, Rodrigo Barrera was just as good, stopping three shots from the Cardinals by the 20:30 mark.

Elizabethtown (17-1-1) went in front in the 32nd minute on Light's 10th goal of the season. Martin Fevre started the goal in motion with his free kick from just inside midfield and Jack Rudy picked up the primary assist when his header in the box went to Light at the right post for the goal.

With the icebreaker behind them, the Blue Jays went on the attack again in the second half. Fevre directed a slot pass to Light, who beat Tashjy in the 60th minute for his second of the night and a 2-0 Elizabethtown lead. Less than 10 minutes later, in the 69th minute, Noah Andrews fed Light in the middle of the box for the Lower Dauphin product's hat trick goal.

Before it was all said and done, Eneme popped in his fourth goal of the season –all against the Cards– in the 80th minute. Scott Hess assisted on Eneme's tally, sending a deft pass in from the right end line.

Catholic, the defending Landmark champion, would avoid the shutout with a fortuitous goal by Corbin Brailsford in the 81st minute.

Elizabethtown extended its winning streak to 11 games and will try to win its first conference championship since the 2006 Commonwealth Conference title Saturday at 6 p.m. against Scranton. The Blue Jays have been to three conference championship games since the '06 title, most recently in 2013. Wednesday's victory was E-town's first in the postseason as a member of the Landmark.

Light's trio of goals came on a game-high five shots and Waso had four. Catholic outshot Elizabethtown 16-15, but the Blue Jays held a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal. Barrera, who has recorded a win in all 17 of the Blue Jays' victories, made seven saves before turning the goal over to Ryan Sandell for the final 2:03.
