Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Kreider establishes new wins mark, Jays split

SCRANTON, Pa.Randall Kreider became Elizabethtown College volleyball's all-time winningest coach Saturday with his 261st career victory as the Blue Jays swept Merchant Marine 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-19) for their first Landmark Conference win of the season. Scranton would fend off two E-town comeback bids in the nightcap, however, holding on, 3-2 (18-25, 25-17, 23-25, 26-24, 10-15).

The 14th year bench boss surpassed Bill Helm (1984-87; 1994-2000) for the most wins in team history. Kreider and Helm are the only coaches at Elizabethtown to surpass 250 wins in the program's 38-year history. Only one other coach, Pam Drazkowski (1988-92), has reached the 100-win club (119).

Kreider has taken his teams to the postseason nine times, winning the Commonwealth Conference championship in 2007 and reaching the championship match in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The Blue Jays qualified for the 2007 NCAA Division III Tournament and appeared in the postseason seven consecutive seasons from 2004-10. Kreider's Blue Jays have finished with winning records nine times and this year's team is trending in that direction once again following its 12th win of the season.

Mackenzie Garner temporarily set new career-highs with 19 kills and 40 attempts, while hitting a robust .425 to lead E-town (12-8, 1-4 Landmark) past the Mariners. Garner would surpass her kill and attempt benchmarks later against Scranton. Freshman outside hitter Sarah Schneider gave the Blue Jays a strong effort with a career-high 13 kills and a block.

In a well-balanced effort from Elizabethtown, Steph High recorded 30 assists and eight digs, Shannon Deck had 14 digs and Juliana Mowen 11.

E-town set the tone early, leading most of the opening set against Merchant Marine (10-6, 1-3 Landmark) before scoring three of the final four points. A Garner kill and Megan McNaul ace concluded the set.

Though the Mariners would pull ahead 14-7 in the second, it was the Blue Jays who remained composed. Schneider drove in a pair of her kills, with Anna Simpson and High also tallying one each in a 7-0 spurt that turned the middle set around for Elizabethtown. The Blue Jays would not relinquish the lead, holding on for a two-point victory.

Sophomore Emily Sexton started the third with a kill and an ace, sending the Blue and Gray on its way to the sweep. Sexton, Simpson and McNaul each had three kills in the match. Twelve players registered digs and E-town finished with nine aces for the second match in a row.

Against the Royals, Garner went for 23 kills on 48 attemps and also had a pair of blocks. E-town twice rallied from a set down to tie the Royals (17-6, 5-0 Landmark), but could not finish off the comeback in the fifth.

Three players joined Garner with double-figure kills for the Jays. Mowen and Schneider had 12 apiece and Janae Moran 10. Mowen, Moran and High all finished with double-doubles in the loss. Mowen added a career-high 20 digs to go along with her 12 kills, while Moran provided 14 digs. High totaled 48 assists and 17 digs.

Deck and McNaul gave Elizabethtown five players with double-digit digs as the team combined for 83 on the night. Deck had 14 and McNaul 12 to go along with her team-high four aces.

Elizabethtown hosts Stevenson Thursday at 7 p.m. The match will be played at Mount Calvary Christian School in Elizabethtown.
