Blue Jays tame Greyhounds, stay perfect in Landmark play

LANCASTER, Pa. – Aaron Rathsam and Jeff Light each had a goal and an assist and Rodrigo Barrera made two flashy first-half saves in Elizabethtown's 3-0 win over Moravian Saturday evening at the Manheim Township Athletic Complex.

The Blue Jays struck gold on their first shot of the game. Attempting to clear a free kick into the box, Moravian's defense put the ball right out to Rathsam at the top of the 18. The sophomore midfielder wasted no time, sending a shot off the left post and in for a 1-0 lead in the third minute.

Though the shots were just 5-4 in favor of E-town (9-1-1, 3-0 Landmark) at the half, it was the Blue Jays that carried much of the play. That fact became clearer as the game wore on and Elizabethtown dominated the ball in the second half, taking 14 shots to Moravian's one and all five corners.

Barrera wasn't busy Saturday, but was brilliant when called upon. In the 26th minute, the Greyhounds' (6-5, 1-2 Landmark) Robert McKinley sent a whistler towards the upper region of the net, but Barrera stretched out to knock it over the crossbar just in time. He made his second save later in the half, before the Jays kept Moravian from threatening in the second.

Great scoring chances were abundant for the Blue Jays on this night. Some pretty passing led to a chance for Martin Fevre in the 13th minute, but Moravian keeper Brian Boland's quick instincts allowed him to dart right to snag the shot. Cal Graziano and Shane Votto also had shots stopped by Boland before the half.

Votto had another goal elude him in the second half when his header in the 73rd minute was stopped at the left post by defender Corey Klaskin.

By that point, E-town had increased its lead to 2-0 thanks to Jeff Light's goal in the 57th minute, his third of the season. Rathsam fired the initial shot from about 25 yards out. Boland was able to make the first save, but Light was on the doorstep to knock it home.

Sophomore Ryan Somerville capped the scoring in the 90th minute after some beautiful ball movement from Scott Hess and Light. Light found Somerville wide open in the box and Somerville ripped it to the right upper 90 for the final 3-0 margin.

Seven of the 10 field players in Elizabethtown's starting lineup took at least one shot, with Votto's four a game-high. Freshman Jagger McFarland made his Blue Jay debut when he started the second half.

Saturday's game was moved to Lancaster as Ira R. Herr Field tried to cope with rain that had been falling since Thursday. The Blue Jays expect to be back on their home pitch Wednesday when Susquehanna visits for a 7 p.m. start.
