Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Late onslaught carries field hockey to 3-1 win over Goucher

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Most of the numbers were skewed heavily in the Elizabethtown field hockey team's favor Saturday afternoon against Goucher. But, with 12 minutes left, the number that mattered wasn't. Trailing 1-0, the Blue Jays turned things around with three goals in the final 10:55 to fend off the Gophers, 3-1, in a Landmark Conference game at Wolf Field.

Nearly the entire first half was played at Elizabethtown's offensive end of the field, but despite nine shots and six corners, the Jays (5-4, 2-0 Landmark) couldn't come up with a goal. Goucher's defense and starting goalie, Demie Huffman, were kept on their toes, but Huffman swatted aside six shots.

Goucher (7-2, 1-1 Landmark), without a shot in the first half, scored on its very first shot of the game just 1:13 into the second. Annie Carter deposited a Jackie Juarez pass by Blue Jay keeper Margo Donlin, and though the Gophers were outshot 20-2 on the afternoon, Carter's icebreaker had the very real possibility of standing up as the game-winner with each passing minute.

E-town got back to dominating possession and chances following the goal, including a five-minute stretch where it rattled off four more shots. Huffman stopped Nicole Leaf and attempts from Megan Eppley and Emma Christman were both blocked by Gopher defenders before they could reach Huffman.

There was only so much the visitors could do before the dam burst. With 11 minutes to play, Jacki Hikes' penalty corner found the stick of Christman, who sent a hard pass back in the direction of Hikes at the left post. The Nazareth native settled it and pushed it past Huffman from her knees to knot the game at one.

Margo Donlin would make her only save on a Maya Belin shot with 9:30 to go and Elizabethtown took the lead for good with just 4:09 left when Christman scooped up a pinballing pass near the penalty spot, made a move to the right to fake out Huffman and scored her third goal of the season.

Goucher would pull Huffman during a timeout at the goal to try and get more offense, but it would not pay off. Allison McLamb put the finishing touches on the comeback with an empty net goal in the 69th minute, her first as a Blue Jay. Freshman Renee Grill set up the goal with a pass in from the right side for her first career point.

Christman led all players with six shots, Leaf had four, and Andrea Keady and Eppley each totaled three for the Blue Jays, who have won three of their last four games.

Huffman stopped eight shots in the loss for Goucher.

Elizabethtown begins a string of three straight games away from Wolf Field Wednesday at Wilkes.
