Men's soccer makes statement with win at Merchant Marine

KING'S POINT, N.Y. — It was a slow start to Saturday's pivotal Landmark Conference matchup for the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team at Merchant Marine. The No. 21 Blue Jays weathered the early storm behind the stellar keeping of Rodrigo Barrera and left New York with a big 1-0 win to remain perfect in conference and register its fifth straight win overall.

Barrera made four of his five saves in the game for Elizabethtown (11-1-1, 5-0 Landmark) in the first 20 minutes of the game. Gavin Yingling tested the senior goalie with shots in the fourth and fifth minutes, but Barrera was equal to the task to keep the game scoreless.

Merchant Marine (8-4-1, 2-2-1 Landmark) held the red-hot E-town attack in check in the first half, with the Jays only getting off two shots and none on goal.

The second half was a different story for Skip Roderick's squad as the offense came to life. Freshman sensation Gilbert Waso forced USMMA goalie Cory Maier into his first save of the game in the 52nd minute, E-town's first shot on goal of the contest.

Already in the midst of a career year, junior Jeff Light shouldered much of the offensive load Saturday, taking a team-high six shots. It was his fifth shot that became the difference in the closely-played match.

Waso slotted a through ball for Light in the 65th minute to the right side. Light, coming off a two-goal performance this past Wednesday against Susquehanna, kept his hot streak going, beating Maier to the left side for his sixth of the season and giving Elizabethtown the all-important goal.

The E-town backline, meanwhile, locked down the Mariners' offense, holding Merchant Marine without a shot over the final 39 minutes of play. Barrera was not needed to make a save the final 45.

The men's soccer team will go for its sixth-straight win when Penn State-Berks visits Ira R. Herr Field on Wednesday, October 14 at 4:30 p.m.
