CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Elizabethtown led at halftime for the second day in a row, but left without a victory in the DeSales Holiday Tournament presented by OAA. New Jersey City University outscored the Blue Jays 44-20 in the second half to claim the consolation game 75-57 Sunday afternoon.
Joe Bodnar buried three 3-pointers in the first half and
Matt Lapkowicz was 2-of-2, as the Jays (4-7) went 6-of-8 as a team beyond the arc.
Elizabethtown, which took a nine-point lead, 25-16, with 10:24 left in the first half, played with an advantage for the final 17:23 of the half and were up 37-31 at the break.
Bodnar, who led the Blue Jays with 15 points, hit his fourth trey and made 1-of-2 free throws in the first 6:05 of the second. E-town and NJCU (3-8) matched points, keeping the Jays ahead 46-40.
But, in similar fashion to Saturday's 72-69 double overtime loss to DeSales, the latter part of regulation would prove to be Elizabethtown's downfall.
Khalid Muhammad's jumper with 13:07 to play sprung the Gothic Knights on an 11-0 run over four minutes that the Blue Jays could not answer. E-town missed five straight shots and turned the ball over four times during the run. With two
Jake Sweger free throws and a layup by
Tommy James, the Jays cut the lead to 51-50 with 7:21 to play, but they'd only score seven points from that point forward.
New Jersey City, which had only shot over 40 percent in two of its previous 10 games coming into Sunday, shot 41.3% (26-of-63) against the Blue Jays. Neville Joseph was 5-of-9 for 14 points and Joseph Kelley 3-of-5 for 10 as the Gothic Knights picked up the pace in the second half, going 16-of-30. NJCU also enjoyed its best 3-point shooting day of the season at 50% (5-of-10), after not shooting better than 37.5% all season.
Phil Wenger, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, scored 11 points to go with three assists and two steals. Lapkowicz had 10 points.
Joseph finished with 19 points for NJCU, which also got double-digit outputs from Kelley (10) and David Cole (10). Eddie Brown added 12 rebounds and seven points. Joseph and Jourdan Roberson had seven rebounds each as the Gothic Knights more than doubled up the Jays on the glass, 51-25.
Elizabethtown hosts Catholic in a Landmark Conference game Tuesday at 7.
