SCRANTON, Pa. – Elizabethtown shot a season-worst 25% from the floor and was held without a 3-pointer in suffering its fifth loss of the season, 69-34, at nationally-ranked No. 13/14 Scranton Saturday afternoon.
In their early January meeting at Thompson Gymnasium, the Blue Jays put up a fight into the second half, but the Royals (18-2, 10-0 Landmark) wouldn't allow that this time.
Meredith Mesaris scored a game-high 25 points, Sarah Payonk overwhelmed E-town on the boards with 14 and eight points and Alexix Roman added 15 points. Elizabethtown (13-5, 6-5 Landmark) could not counter Scranton's post players, as the home side opened a 40-16 lead at halftime.
It was a struggle from the tip for E-town, which made just 7-of-31 (22.6%) shots in the opening half. Scranton outrebounded the Jays 25-12 and collected 10 second chance points in the half.
Taylor Alwine led Elizabethtown with 12 points. Ironically, Alwine was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field, but the rest of the team combined to go 9-of-54.
Alyssa Aichele had six rebounds and four points, and
Krissy Pennell four points.
No one outside of those three had more than two points for the blue and gray.
E-town finished the game 15-of-60 (25%), but did make all four of its free throws.
Scranton, meanwhile, connected on nearly 46% of its shots and lived at the foul line, going 21-of-25.
The Blue Jays will look to put this one behind them as Catholic comes to town for a pivotal game Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., which can be seen live on
BlueJaysTV.
