Frostburg State 135, Elizabethtown 124ResultsFROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State came up with wins in the final two events, the 200-meter individual medley and 200-meter freestyle, to spoil Elizabethtown's final regular season dual meet, 135-124, Friday night at the Bobcat Natatorium.
Kimberly Cosgrove and
Bonnie Lisk collected two wins apiece for the Blue Jays.
Heading into the 200 IM, the visitors held a slim two-point lead, 113-111, but a 1-2 finish from Frostburg State (4-9) juniors Kaitlyn Donch (2:43.82) and Maci Quintanilla (2:47.50) put the Bobcats in front. The Blue Jays (3-6) still had an opportunity to flip the meet in their favor and they came painfully close to doing it in the 200 free relay.
Rachel Engelhardt stayed close in her stint to lead off the relay, before senior
Tara Deisher swam a 30.11 50-meter split that gave the Jays the lead halfway through the race. Cosgrove held the slim lead and
Joni Fleming put in a strong 29.57 split, the second fastest split by any swimmer in the race. Unfortunately, it was Bobcat freshman Macey Nitchie coming up with a 27.51 to steal the win and 11 points from E-town.
Cosgrove had another outstanding meet, two days after collecting wins in the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle events at home against McDaniel. She mopped up the distance free events once again, claiming the 800-meter edition by 50 seconds with a 10:11.48 and the 400-meter in 5:05.32. Cosgrove improved her 800 time from her only other swim in a meter pool this season (at Lebanon Valley Nov. 25), and she and Deisher went 1-2 for Elizabethtown in the 400.
The Blue Jays and Bobcats chose to swim an extended meet in a sprint format, competing in 50 and 100 strokes. Lisk won the uncommon 50-meter backstroke in 34.94 by half a second over FSU's Sara King. Later, she completed the backstroke sweep with a winning time of 1:15.80 in the 100m.
Junior
Amanda Long triumphed in a thrilling 100m breaststroke, holding off a charge from Donch and out-touching her at the wall to win by seven hundredths of a second in 1:20.52.
Earlier in the night, it was Donch who got the best of Long in an even closer 50m breast by one-hundredth, 37.43 to 37.44.
Long had another runner-up finish in the 50 free. Engelhardt (100/200 free),
Hunter Smith (100 butterfly) and Deisher (400 free) also recorded second-place finishes.
Elizabethtown will spend the next two weeks preparing for its first Landmark Conference Championships. The Blue Jays will travel to the Germantown Indoor Swim Center in Boyds, Md., Feb. 13-15, looking for top times and medals.
