Cosgrove and Long victorious against Scranton

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Junior Amanda Long won the 50-yard freestyle and set a team-best time in the process, while Kimberly Cosgrove stayed unbeaten in the 1000-yard freestyle, but Elizabethtown women's swimming dropped a 130.5-70.5 Landmark Conference dual to four-time conference runner-up Scranton Saturday at the Alumni Pool.

The Royals won three Landmark titles from 2008-10 and have been second to Susquehanna in each of the last four championship meets. The Blue Jays (3-3, 1-2 Landmark), which saw their three-meet winning streak halted, put in some strong swims, but did not have the depth to match-up scorewise.

Cosgrove broke away from Megan Connor in the 1000 to post a winning time of 11:37.04, within seven seconds of her top time this season. The grad student from Easton would go on to top her own team-best in the 500 free by placing second to Connor in 5:42.55 later in the meet.

In a highly-anticipated 100 breaststroke, Long, ranked fifth in the Landmark, went up against No. 3 Paige Agnello and No. 8 Alexis Walsh. Agnello edged Long by 2.2 seconds with a time of 1:11.20. The Blue Jay junior swam 1:13 flat and Walsh 1:14.24. Walsh (2014) and Agnello (2013) had split the last two Landmark gold medals in the event amongst themselves.

Long broke through for a win in the 50 free, setting the team's fast time for the season with a 26.74. The time was 1.26 better than her 28 flat earlier in the year and was E-town's first sub-27-second time this season.

Four-tenths of a second was all that separated Cosgrove from her fourth consecutive win in the 200 free. Scranton's (7-2, 4-0 Landmark) Emma Sommers won the race Saturday in 2:08.22 ahead of Cosgrove's 2:08.66.

Rachel Engelhardt, competing in her first meet after spending much of the fall semester abroad, took fourth in the 50 free. Her time of 28.71 was fourth fastest on the team this year. The junior also set E-town's third quickest 100 free time with a 1:02.48, just eight-tenths shy of Tara Deisher's 1:01.68.

Swimming the 400 individual medley for the first time this season, senior Hunter Smith placed third in 5:36.16. Smith got right back in the pool after the men's 400 IM to tie for second in the 100 butterfly with a 1:10.46.

Mariselle Parisi set two personal season-bests, first in the 100 free with a 1:02.26, and then in the 100 breast with a 1:18.71. Parisi's 100 free time was the team's second best in 2014-15.

Elizabethtown returns to action following the winter break. They'll face Washington (Md.) on the road Saturday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m.
