SAN JUAN — A quick start and a dominating performance from
Emily Martin helped the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team end the 2014 portion of its schedule undefeated at 8-0. The Blue Jays, featuring four scorers in double figures, outscored Albright in each half to prevail, 63-52, in the Puerto Rico Basketball Classic Thursday evening.
Krissy Pennell,
Rachel Forjan, and Martin all scored as Elizabethtown collected the first eight points 4:30 into the game. Jane Joyce made two free throws for Albright's (6-3) first points of the game with 15:42 on the clock.
The Lions were right back in it with a run of their own. While the Jays (8-0) led the entire way, Albright did not allow E-town to pull away in the first half, keeping its deficit at five points or less. A Forjan bucket with four seconds left in the opening 20 minutes gave EC a 32-27 going into the break.
Elizabethtown shot 14-for-33 (42.4%) and made four of its six free throws. The Blue Jays also scored ten points off 11 Albright turnovers.
Alyssa Aichele helped E-town's lead blossom to nine on her bucket just over three minutes into the second half to bring the score to 40-31. Martin brought it to 12 as the Jays held the Lions scoreless for a five-minute period during the second half.
Martin subbed out with 13:04 to go and re-entered at 10:41 with the Jays only up six, and that's when she really made her mark on the game. In one sequence spanning just over a minute, the sophomore recorded a block, a defensive board, a steal, and drew a foul.
Minutes later, with Elizabethtown grabbing control of the game once again, Martin came through with another block at one end of the floor, then drew a foul and made both ensuing free throws at the other. On Albright's next possession, she grabbed another defensive rebound.
In total, the Lancaster Catholic product hauled in a game- and season-high 14 rebounds to go along with her 13 points. She also recorded four blocks, three steals and two assists. Martin was just three rebounds shy of matching her career-high of 17, set last season in a home win over Stevenson.
Forjan led EC with 14 points. Aichele was 5-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-4 at the foul line for 13 points and six steals. Pennell added 11 points and four steals.
The Jays were able to hold the Lions' top scorer Kelecia Harris to 13 points and eight rebounds. Albright shot 19-for-62 from the floor in the game (30.6%).
Neither squad could connect on a three-pointer as they combined to go 0-for-17. E-town outscored the Lions at the foul line (19-14) and in points off turnovers (23-9).
The women's basketball team will return to action in 2015, beginning with a home game against nationally-ranked Landmark foe Scranton on Saturday, Jan. 3, at 2 p.m.
