Women's swimming beats LVC for third straight win

Results

ANNVILLE, Pa.Kimberly Cosgrove and Amanda Long combined for five wins Tuesday evening as the Elizabethtown College women's swim team won its third straight dual with a 109-96 triumph at Lebanon Valley.

Competing in a meter pool for the first of two times this season (Frostburg State on Jan. 30, 2015), the Blue Jays won six events, led by Cosgrove's second consecutive three-win meet.

Cosgrove cruised to another distance win by leading start-to-finish in the 800-meter freestyle. Her time of 10:16.40 led a sweep of the top two spots for Blue Jay swimmers. Sophomore Katie Derreth was second in 11:10.58, while Cosgrove's younger sister, LVC sophomore Brianna Cosgrove, was third. Kimberly remained unbeaten in the longest-distance events this season. She was 3-for-3 in the 1000-yard free and is now 1-for-1 in the 800-meter free.

As commanding as her swims have been in the distance free, the graduate student from Easton has been nearly as good in the mid-distance 200 free. Tuesday she put forth a 2:24.11 to outpace Lebanon Valley's (1-5) Alayna Kalinay by 4.4 seconds. Freshman Megan Anderson just missed out on the runner-up spot as she and Kalinay battled throughout the event. Anderson finished in 2:28.64 to earn three points for the Blue Jays and her converted time of 2:13.91 currently stands as a season best.

Elizabethtown (3-2) countered a win from LVC's Leslie Hiller in the 50 free by taking second, third and fourth. Joni Fleming led the EC trio with a 31.06 for second, Tara Deisher was third at 31.44 and Molly Templin fourth at 33.96. Fleming's time converts to a 27.98, tops on the team this season, while Deisher's yard-converted time (28.32) is also a season best.

Long won two individual races for the second time in her last three meets. She was first to the wall in the 200 individual medley for the first time this season in a time of 2:45.99, going 1-2 with freshman Dru Schneider (2:50.94). Later, she captured her fourth breaststroke win in five tries, with a time of 1:20.92 in the 100-meter race. Again, the Blue Jays claimed the top two spots with sophomore Mariselle Parisi finishing second (1:28.21).

Senior Hunter Smith continued to own the 100 butterfly, as she was victorious in the event for the third meet in a row. Smith's time of 1:17.26 was over three seconds better than second place Katie Frace of the Dutchmen.

The Blue Jays return home for the third of their four home meets a week from Saturday, Dec. 6, against Scranton at 1 p.m.
