Wrestling goes 1-2 at New York City/Pennsylvania Duals

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Elizabethtown wrestling picked up its first dual win of the season Saturday, 23-20, over Nassau Community College in the New York City/Pennsylvania Duals at King's College. The Blue Jays went 1-2 on the day, winning their opener before falling to Hunter, 36-17, and New York University, 43-6.

Trailing 8-6 to Nassau C.C. after back-to-back major decisions, the Blue Jays (1-3) regained the lead with a 5-4 decision from Chris Kummerer at 149 and Mike Lammer's second major decision of the season, 13-5 over Ralph Cazzetta, at 157.

E-town would trail again, 14-13, following a pin at 165, but Zeke Zimmer (decision), Luke Fernandez (major decision) and Jared Weaver (decision) won their respective matches at 174 and 184 and 197 to build an insurmountable 23-14 lead. Zimmer and Weaver remained tied for the team lead in wins, each wrestler recording his seventh of the season in the victory over the Lions (1-3).

The Blue Jays got off to a slow start against Hunter (3-0), which had already beaten King's and Scranton earlier in the day.

The Hawks won 125 and 133 by decision, before Cory Palmer doubled their lead with a 4:24 pin of Bryan Pflanz at 141.

Consecutive pins from the Lammer brothers at 149 and 157 quickly erased Hunter's lead, however. Chad Lammer worked into the final 14 seconds of regulation to get a 6:46 fall of Andy Huang at 149, while Mike Lammer pinned Declan Gray in 3:43 at 157.

Seven of the last eight bouts in the match were decided by pin, with four going Hunter's way. The one match that didn't end with a pin came at 174, where Zimmer cranked out 20 points for a 20-3 technicall fall over Maksimillian Garkusha. Zimmer's second victory of the day brought the Blue Jays back within one at 18-17, but the Hawks went on to score 18 points in the final three weight classes with a trio of pins.

The Violets used six pins in 10 bouts to rack up 43 points in the 43-6 defeat of the Blue Jays. Bryan Pflanz picked up a 13-8 decision at 133 pounds to briefly tie the match 3-3, while Zimmer capped a 3-0 day for himself by scoring more bonus points in a 17-6 major decision over Roman Accetta at 174.

NYU's Brandon Jones, ranked No. 3 by both the NWCA and D3wrestle.com, earned the first of his team's six pins with a 3:31 fall of Miranda at 141.

Elizabethtown will now turn its attention to next Friday's home dual with Wilkes. Match time is 7:30 p.m.
