Late pin gives Gettysburg 25-19 win over Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Jared Weaver's pin at 197 pounds thrust Elizabethtown wrestling into a 19-19 tie with Gettysburg heading into the final match of Wednesday evening's dual opener for both teams. But the Bullets responded with a pin of their own to steal a 25-19 victory from Thompson Gymnasium.

Weaver brought the Blue Jays (0-1) even after they had trailed from the start. The senior from Boyds, Maryland, threw Shahn Savino to the mat with just under 1:30 left in the first period and held firm before earning the fall 29 seconds later (2:02). Weaver had E-town's lone pin in the match, while the Bullets (1-0) were rewarded with three.

Senior Steven Paul went head-to-head with Gettysburg sophomore Joey Bragg in the deciding heavyweight bout. Though he was able to get a takedown early in the period, Paul got reversed near the halfway point of the first, leading to Bragg's fall at 1:37 and the win for Gettysburg.

The young Bullets, which wrestled six freshmen, avenged a 37-12 loss to the Blue Jays in their home gym last November.

Noah Malamut was the first of those rookies to see the mat for the visitors. He gave Gettysburg a 6-0 lead by pinning John Archangelo at 1:52 of their 125-pound matchup.

133-pounder Tim Miranda chopped into the Bullets lead for E-town with an 8-5 decision over Barrett Connor, though Gettysburg would quickly run its lead to 16-3 with bonus points from Jake Bracken at 141 (major decision) and Quinn Merrigan at 149 (fall).

Three straight wins from Elizabethtown, capped by Weaver's dramatic pin, put the blue and gray back on even footing.

Zeke Zimmer picked up a 9-3 decision over Tyler Cunningham at 174 and Luke Fernandez was a 4-1 winner at 184 ahead of Weaver.

Mike Lammer was also victorious for the Jays at 157, where he used 1:48 of riding time to gain an extra point that gave him a 15-7, four-point, major decision. The extra point loomed large when Weaver tied it with his pin at 197.

Elizabethtown will travel to King's (Pa.) for the New York City/Pennsylvania Duals Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. The Blue Jays will face Hunter, New York University and Nassau County Community College in Wilkes-Barre.
