Blue Jays send seniors out with pair of wins

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown volleyball sent its four seniors out on a high note, holding off Lycoming 3-2 and sweeping Wilkes 3-0 in a non-conference tri-match at Thompson Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Behind 21 kills from Kelci Scannapieco and double-doubles by Steph High and Brynne Kirsch, the Blue Jays (13-19) outlasted the Warriors 25-17, 27-25, 21-25, 25-27, 17-15.

E-town took advantage of Lycoming's poor-hitting first set to grab the lead. Taylor Beck delivered four kills and the Blue Jays threw up four blocks, including a solo and two assists from Samantha Hicks.

Scannapieco's set-high 10 kills helped the blue and gray prevail in a second set in which the lead was swapped three times and tied another eight. Megan McNaul had three kills and two aces, and Elizabethtown outhit its former Commonwealth Conference rival .278 (16-6-36) to .273 (15-6-33).

The Blue Jays had a chance to put the Warriors (17-15) away following a Scannapieco kill that gave them a 25-24 lead, but a service error pulled Lyco even again. High then set Scannapieco for her 10th kill of the set and Jen Cook finished it with an ace.

Elizabethtown looked to be headed for the win in four sets, capping a 3-0 run with a kill by McNaul that put the home team ahead 17-12. But Lycoming won seven of the next nine points, with Tayler Whitman killing twice and Kristine Jahn serving up an ace to tie the set. The Warriors wouldn't slow down, adding six of the final eight points to take the third 25-21. The Blue Jays had equally great chances to take the fourth, but this time Lycoming held on 27-25.

Randall Kreider's team had seen its share of leads slip away this season, but the Blue Jays were determined not to let it happen again. Facing match point, an attacking error by the Warriors tied the set at 15. Hicks and Beck, two seniors playing their final matches, then dropped back-to-back kills for a thrilling 17-15 victory.

Scannapieco's 21 kills were a match-high and put her over the 400-kill mark in a season for the first time in her career. She also finished with four block assists. High collected 27 assists and 13 digs, while Kirsch set up 22 kills and dug out 10 Lyco attacks. Cook kept her fair share of rallies alive with 25 digs.

Lycoming got 19 kills from Bethany Richardson and 14 from Whitman. Whitman added 16 digs for a double-double, while Catherine Burger handed out 52 assists.

Elizabethtown kept the drama to a minimum against Wilkes (13-17), sweeping the Lady Colonels after they had beaten Lycoming in four in the middle match.

Twenty-nine attacking errors and nine service errors played heavily into the visitors' downfall. Scannapieco, who entered the match needing 16 kills to eclipse 1,000 for her collegiate career between Juniata (freshman season) and E-town (sophomore through senior seasons), was afforded only 22 attempts and tallied 10. She finished her career with 994 total and 974 at Elizabethtown, which still ranks seventh all-time.

The York native's 424 kills this season are the fourth most in school history. Scannapieco finished two kills shy of third-place Paige Tanner's 426 in 2008 and three off of Liz Bishard's 427 in 1996.

McNaul and Beck added five kills each, while Brittianni Phillips and Hicks had three.

Elizabethtown collected eight aces against the Lady Colonels, three of which came from Kirsch. Five players: High, McNaul, Beck, Victoria Leidy and Morgan Reiss accounted for the remainder.

Cook recorded 14 digs, with High (15) and Kirsch (11) both having their second double-digit assist matches of the afternoon.

E-town, which finishes the season 13-19, loses seniors Beck, Cook, Hicks and Scannapieco.
