ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — In their final regular season home game at Wolf Field, the Elizabethtown College field hockey seniors made it one to remember as they shut out the top offense in the Landmark Conference 2-0 Saturday afternoon. Senior
Kaylee Werner scored what proved to be the game-winning goal while fellow classmate
Selene Jones made six saves for her fifth shutout of the season.
The first shot of the game didn't come until 11:56 in when
Addie Stang's shot was saved by Krista Mundy.
Emily Mason took Elizabethtown's (11-6, 5-2 Landmark) one and only penalty corner that led to Stang's attempt at goal.
Scranton's (13-5, 4-3 Landmark) Alyssa Fania, the league's leader in multiple offensive categories, had a chance to knot up the game at the13:34, but Jones was there to deny the Royals' top attacker.
The Jays only had five shots in the game, with four of those coming in the first half. They made two of them count, however, to put Scranton on its heels.
Kendra Hudson dumped the ball into the circle. It took a deflection and found its way right to Werner, who was standing at the left post to slam the ball into the cage for her third of the season. That gave E-town a 1-0 at the 16:37 mark.
Six minutes later,
Alyssa Aichele doubled the lead. She used her stick to deflect the ball on goal, with Mundy making the initial save. Aichele collected the rebound and sent it into the goal for her seventh of the season.
The Blue Jays' defense was under siege for much of the second half as the Royals looked to get back into the game. Scranton earned five penalty corners in final period, but Jones and company did not allow a breakthrough.
Early on, Fania and Amanda Maresca looked to have Jones beaten, but the senior goalie sprawled to make back-to-back saves to keep the two-goal lead intact for EC.
While Jones made five big saves in the second half,
Emily Mason,
Marissa Sneeringer and countless others were there to make sure Scranton couldn't pounce on any of the rebounds.
E-town didn't allow a shot on goal over the final 12 minutes en route to locking up the second seed in the Landmark Conference tournament.
The field hockey team will host third-seeded Juniata on Wednesday, November 5 at 3:30 p.m. at Wolf Field in one of the Landmark Conference semifinals. Catholic and Scranton will compete in the other.
