ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Lauren Berry followed in the footsteps on her own teammate Wednesday evening against Washington (Md.), giving the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team its second straight game with a hat trick. Berry tallied twice in the first half and added her third not long after halftime as the Jays went on to defeat the Shorewomen 4-1 in non-conference action.
A penchant for scoring early in its games, Elizabethtown (7-3) was up in the fifth minute thanks to Berry.
Maddie Burkhardt's header toward goal was blocked, but the ball fell to Berry, who buried her ensuing shot to begin the scoring.
A little over ten minutes later, Berry got on the end of Burkhardt's cross to push the Jays' advantage to 2-0.
Washington (Md). (3-6-1) keeper Melissa Barry was plenty busy all night. She was forced into making six saves in the first half to keep the score at just 2-0 going into the break. Barry ended up with ten saves by game's end.
The dominance continued into the second half, and just like the game had started, Berry found herself on the score sheet early in the half.
The junior forward completed her hat trick in the 49th minute, taking a pass from
Trisha Clark, dribbling to her left at the top of the box, and cracking a shot toward goal. Her shot took a deflection that left the goalkeeper frozen as she watched it drop in over her head.
Minutes later,
Kaceyanne Cerankowski tied her career high with her eighth goal of the season at the 51:00 mark exactly.
Caroline Novak played the ball up to the midfielder, who took care of the rest, racing into the box and depositing her shot into the right side netting for the score.
The Shorewomen did end E-town's shutout bid in the 64th minute when Suzanna Patinella pounced on a deflection just inside the box. It was the second and final shot of the game for Washington (Md.).
The women's soccer team jumps back into Landmark Conference play on Saturday, October 11 at Susquehanna for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
